I think one of the main reasons they went with Vijay is' date= in the absence of 2 specialist openers (Sachin and Sehwag), they wanted a technically sound opening batsman comfortable against the new ball. Vijay has a pretty good one day record so I think its a good selection actually. I would not have picked Jadeja though. He seemed totally and utterly out of his depth in international cricket. Kohli should have been picked over Jadeja.
Agree. May be if the T20 WC debacle had not happened they would have gone with Virat as a makeshift opener. May be Rohit has not satisfied the selectors...particularly his handling of the short ball against fast bowlers, so they thought he would be better off batting in the middle order whereas a specialist opener could open the batting..so they've had enough of makeshift openers. And we have enough power hitters in the lower order.. Having said that, I dont think Vijay is ever going to get a match as long as MSD is the captain.. So its a waste of a spot..he's going to be a bench warmer for sure. Jadeja is OK for ODIs if not for T20s.

Is it so difficult to grasp that Virat Kohli is not an opener and M Vijay is. I dont understand what this regionalism debate is about :wall: But having said that M Vijay isnt an agressive batsman and we may not be able to utilize the power play overs properly if vijay and gautam open the innings for us. I dont see him getting a game unless theres an injury to rohit or gauti.

The fk u fks are fking about. Murali vijay was in the squad the last time we played test match as a replacement opener. Without either Sehwag and Sachin, and with only 1 opener in Gambhir, obviously Murali vijay was chosen as the replacement opener. Do you really want nohit Sharma to open again?
And what are you fking about? Those were test matches not ODI's.Is this some kind of a rule that only test opener can replace ODI's opener?

I am having some difficulties understanding why everyone is constantly justifying the performance of Kohli' date=' I have not negated that [i']at all. In fact I provided the figures to prve that the guy averages 50 in List A. My point is this is the kind of series in which you would normally have given both the lads a chance, not one or the other. There was no reason to drop Kohli and none not to select Vijay.
Well, TBH, I think Kohli and Badri should have been selected over Vijay. Mainly because Kohli's done well, and Badri has a terrific record in the domestics that warrant his selection, despite of his entire batting being suspect for me. Vijay has time on his hands, and I will agree that perhaps both could be selected but given that they were fighting for the same spot, Kohli deserved it ahead of Vijay, IMO.

Rohit hasn't done so terrible that he ought to be dropped from the squad. I really think Kohli deserved it though, and he has opened before in Sehwag's absence. So your whole theory about Vijay being chosen an opener falls flat.

Yes. I want Rohit Sharma to open because I feel, and so do his skipper as well as selector that he has immense potential and given a certain period of time, he will adapt himself beautifully to that spot!

Ok, if there was one spot up for grabs. Kohli was given an opportunity he has already proved his capable. Now Vijay is being test as an alternative for increased bench strength. I am not going to justify Vijay deserves it more than Kohli since I never took that position.
LOL! Kohli is not some established batsman that he was not picked so that we can test Vijay. Kohli played in just one series in SL and did wonderfully well in a low scoring series. Instead of picking him and giving him more opportunity you pick Vijay, who even you admit does not deserve the spot more than Kohli based on merit. And this is supposed to be sound, unbiased selection?

Itni discussions toh selectors bhi nahi karte honge.5-10 minutes mein team choose kar lete hai aur yahan fight ho rahi hai.:giggle:

Rohit will get more chances as an opener. Moreover, Kohli already did the job successfully in Sri Lanka. I can say with confidence Vijay will not open in any game unless it's a dead rubber so the opening thing goes out of the window.

Rohit has constantly shown glimpses of the immense talent he has. I think (hope) its a matter of time before he secures a place in the team

vijay is talented and if developed properly will be a class act. all this cries about biased selection even if true are ignorant. biased selection or not, he has the talent.i am glad he is given opportunities now.

lets talk about nehra-i am really happy to see him back in indian colors.if we could just tape his mouth shut during bowling everything would be perfect.
Yes at least now we hav a bowler who can bowl in the 140s at the death Hope he shows commitment in the field.

However Vijay is 25 he is older than Kohli but slightly younger than Badri, so not too sure abt time on his hands.

You have both players who have played the same number of List A games and average very close to eachother with almost similar strike rates. One has been given a chance and he is proved that he can do a good job, now you are giving the other one a chance. I still don't see what this has to do with regional bias which you keep parotting on and on. My dear sir methinks you have made up your mind that the Earth is flat and none of my debaating skills can change that. Gadhi pe dil aaya tho pari kya cheez hai!!

For those worried about the rare TN selections, don't worry. I see either of the following happening: 1. Give them no chances in the XI, keep them on the bench, let them get old and then declare them useless 2. Give them a few chances, wait for them to fail once or twice and dump them forever. 3. Dump them the very next series (and possibly forever) when others are available. It is a proven formula and I am sure it will work again to the satisfaction of most here.
