Lurker Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I have met numerous believers and non believers who jump back and forth, so this is not a first time event. Well that sums up life does it not? I understand that many atheists do rational thinking and then turn towards athiesm, or turn away from God depending on how you see it. The problem that lies there though is atheist philosophy is entirely dependent on Science. And Science only explains so much. More often than not it leaves you with more question than answers. Birth and death are two such examples. Science does not explain afterlife, or afterdeath. All it suggests is that someone died because of....It is not enough for most people. Heck when a person loses in love he/she is unable to get the person out of his mind for years, how do you expect him/her to take a loss of a dear one?? If we follow the theory of evolution, which probably would be what atheists believe in, then life is very hard to define. I can see why someone who was an extreme atheist could become ultra Catholic, or vice versa. Simply that people who follow a philosophy with extreme zeal are prone to make a U-turn when they meet dead end. xxx

He was not somebody who became an atheist without serious rational thought, because his arguments and his articles were well thought out writings. Imagine if tomorrow Richard Dawkins says he has become a catholic or muslim and shuts shop. Thats how I felt when I went to his blog yesterday after a while.

It's about hopes and fears.

Macj Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 I am an atheist, the reason I asked this question was, there used to be this blog I used to frequent 2-3 years back called ravingatheist.com, some of you may have known it, pretty smart guy who wrote very well about atheism etc, and he was popular in the online media. Yesterday I went to the same blog after 2 years or so, I see he has converted to being a full on catholic, and apparently he had declined to list out the reasons of why he changed. So that got me thinking, and ask myself what should happen in my life that will probably make me a believer again. I am totally stumped since I cannot come up with any answers. I dont mean to get philosophical but humans suffer pain most when its a loss of someone dear. There are moments of joy and there moments of pain, and in those moments you cant find answers or solace in Science books or words of wisdom from famous Atheists. Many find solace in belief and prayer it gets you through some of the toughest and most difficult periods in life. Such an experience is bound to bring non-believers back in the fold. Think about it, the guy you mentioned was smart , he's probably still smart but his reasoning has changed, so much so that he believes in something that till recently he believed was false.

Macj, as I already said I envy believers for their faith, I have been through tough periods including deaths in my immediate family, and it was brutal, but it didnt change my atheistic convictions, and I completely understand why people need religion in those times.

Whether God is a figmentation or not, it surely is something to cling upon. Having said that, what if you see God and find out that it is a big looking insect looking alien-like. Will your views change then? Life is too short. One is only here for about four days. Might as well enjoy life or should I be looking for a higher purpose. I dont know

The religious duties/acts that are performed, I try to look at them from objective mind, often finding something good coming out of it. This thread has some posts, which I wanted to reply to but then as DomainK has put it very succintly, the debate will always be undesirable. Athiests don't want to believe, fine, thats a choice they make and live with it.

I said I do not want to get into any debate/argument in this regard. I stated my opinion and I will go no further yet. What you want to believe is your prerogative. If you have questions that you want to ask, find someone who has attained wisdom enough to answer your questions. Its a good thing to ask questions and seek answers. I am right now busy helping myself and I don't think I am ready/I want to help/answer others. When I feel I am, I will be more than happy to come back and answer your questions.
