Gambit
Freddie To Retire!!!! :omg::omg: Flintoff has called a press conference at 12.30pm today, in which he is widely expected to announce his retirement from Test cricket at the end of this Ashes summer, although he still intends to make himself available for Twenty20 and ODI cricket. Flintoff, who has missed 25 of England's last 48 Tests through a variety of injuries, suffered another fitness scare on the eve of the Lord's Test, when he reported soreness and swelling in the same right knee that required surgery back in April, after he tore his meniscus while playing in the IPL. Andy Flower, England's coach, remains optimistic that Flintoff will come through a fitness test today and make himself available for the Lord's Test, and he was seen skipping during England's warm-up in the indoor nets, before padding up for batting practice. Prior to the practice, he was seen giving the team talk in a sombre atmosphere, after which Paul Collingwood immediately came up and shook him by the hand. When asked if Flintoff was set to retire from Test cricket, an ECB spokesman told Cricinfo to "wait and see". More to follow. Link Link to comment
DomainK
He wont. This is another BS stunt. At best he will announce it and then retract. Link to comment
Sachinism
WTF no way will England allow him to leave. They would be made into everyones b!tches if they didn't have him as a bowler Link to comment
DomainK
WTF no way will England allow him to leave. They would be made into everyones b!tches if they didn't have him as a bowler Exactly. They are just being attention seekers and inventing something else to divert attention from their crappy performance in the Ashes so far. Be men, play cricket. Link to comment
saneindian
Well as the article says, he is no more the match winner he once was. Stats also suggest the same thing. Since 2005, in 25 teats which Eng played without Flintoff, they won 12, lost 3. In 23 they played with Flintoff, they won 3 and lost 12. Doesnt make a positive difference to England as such. Not sure if Flintoff has got enough power left in the tank to change these stats. Link to comment
varun
Huh why ? He wants to concentrate full-time on IPL ? Link to comment
King
He was the best England bowler in the test match and applied himself wonderfully well with the bat as well. Credit should go to him for giving up him aggressive batting style and trying hard to stay at the wicket. He should definitely continue playing test cricket and it will be a huge loss for England. Bradman99
Yeah after the ashes series and only from tests. Link to comment
Sachinism
So, Is Flintoff no more a team man? Link to comment
King Tendulkar
IPL hungry. Sad really! Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
Huh why ? He wants to concentrate full-time on IPL ? No. Serious chronic knee problems that made him an uncertain selection for the next test, that make him miss 1 in every 2 tests roughly and with which he can't play regularly. This isn't an Afridi-esque retirement for mental weakness or IPL money, this is due to his body simply not being able to cope - going out for the same reasons as the great Chris Cairns did some years ago. Sad. A very very good, occasionally great player. Like Cairns, who knows what could have been if he'd been fit right through. Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
BTW those who feel that Flintoff is turning his back on test cricket for money should have watched games in the past 3-4 years where he'd play with cortisone injections, bat through painkillers and run in on a creaking knee at full pace, not turning down his intensity at all. Even then he's missed massive amounts of cricket (in every form of the game from circus shows to tests) because of his fitness struggles. There are a few cricketers you can accuse of not giving a rat's ass about the long form of the game, but Flintoff is not one of them. Hope he can sort out these injury problems in his future and that the ODIs/T20s don't plague his body as much as tests. Link to comment
Sachinism
^ I asked about Freddie not being a team man because of how people reacted when Dhoni skipped a test series due to fatigue and possibly aggravating any injuries. Its understandable considering the amount of cricket he has missed due to injuries. I still feel ECB will try and get him to stay though Link to comment
diegovegaz
glad he isn't leaving midway the ashes Link to comment
Desi Cartman
This should motivate POMS to give him a great farewell Link to comment
