Rival countries had been hoping Australia would lose their grip on world cricket with the retirements of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn. But those hopes look to have been dashed after an Australian team featuring the next generation of players hardly broke a sweat on the way to winning the World Cup for the third time in a row. "The skills that were on display at that World Cup have probably never been seen before in international cricket and that should be something that we should be very proud of," Ponting said. Ponting said the recent exodus of senior players would not necessarily allow other countries to close the gap. "I think if anything we have increased that margin between the teams through this tournament," Ponting said. Of the 15 Australians who played in the World Cup, only McGrath is quitting. The two openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden both want to continue despite being in their 30s. There is also no shortage of quality younger players coming through with Michael Clarke, Mike Hussey and Andrew Symonds already team regulars. Australia's long search for an all-rounder looks to have borne fruit in the form of Shane Watson, while the fast bowling stocks look as healthy as ever since the emergence of Stuart Clark, Shaun Tait, Nathan Bracken and Mitchell Johnson. Australia's biggest problem is finding a long-term replacement for spinner Warne, but Ponting said the future was still as bright as ever. "I think we have just gone ahead and even widened that gap so it is up to the opposition countries to address that fact and look at what we are doing," he said. "And look at how they are playing their cricket and make sure next time they played against us, they can compete better against us."

I can't see anyone beating them over a 5 match Test series, or even a 3. Although it's evident that they have declined in Test cricket over the last two seasons. England can run them close if they get their act together and have a fully fit squad, but the likelihood of that happening is quite slim. South Africa have the players but they tend to develop a mental block whenever they face South Africa. The three subcon sides are just downright sh*t at Test cricket.

Re: Australia will dominate for years: Ponting Well if the decline of the WI is anything to go by, they should start to suck in ODIs before Tests because ODIs are lot more physically demanding and thus harder on the body and you tend to retire or start to suck faster at it. But then again, the opposite could also be true: This Aussie team has far better ODI players and in tests, the OZ have looked a lot weaker in the past whenever they were missing McGrath or McWarne...they still won most of the time, i know and sometimes got beaten with McWarne in the team too but they did look a lot more fragile without a penetrative opening bowler. Lee is never gonna be that bothersome to classy players except in short and rare patches in Tests. Tait i dunno if he's gonna live up to the hype but c'mon, in Tests you NEED a classy spinner these days to do good and who is gonna replace Warney ? If its McGill, OZ can pretty much forget winning overseas in the subcontinent(minus Ban) and prolly vs Saffies too. What would be the biggest threat to the OZ dominance is the rise of quality pacers overseas. Their bowling is handle-able i think. But their batting is gonna score a truckload of runs unless you got atleast a class two prong happening. And by class i mean you need atleast a Ntini+Asif quality opening attack. Or if not, atleast a good opening fast bowler and a good spinner. Mark my words, but OZ batting will get owned in Sri Lanka if Sri Lanka's batting doen't nuke itself.

AUS losing in SL is conceivable, as i still remember how the SL batsmen were able to hold their own against the Aussie bowling attack. The difference in that contest was none other than Shane Warne, who bowled AUS to a series victory. SL fared well against the rest and would roll over whenever Warney came on.

Kinda baffling that they got nuked by Warney that series. They were playing him pretty poorly too.Even in ODIs, correct me if i am wrong but they have rarely played Warne with ease. Its kind of odd that they play Warne so much poorly than Indians play Warne. Its baffling because they are monster batsmen on spin-friendly surfaces, they get to practice against one of the two greatest spinners of alltime and they practically annihilate any other spinner especially comming to their shores. Kumble,Harbhajan,Kaneria,Mushie, Vettori etc. i think have all been bled dry in Sri Lanka. In many ways they are the carbon-copy of Indian team in terms of playing spin...except they just crap-out when its versus Warney. :huh:

Just because Australia did not dominate anymore is not reason enough to laugh at them. Rather they deserve respect for dominating for that long.

Aussies set a benchmark for dominance in modern era. Other teams have to try to come even close to that.

Yeah, right now, English people are tooo optimistic :two_thumbs_up: They won't be number one for so long. They suck when comes to playing test series outside their home (Australia may be the exception).
