Sachinism Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 If you're a religious person, you have a chosen religion you follow. This is supposed to be the right path to 'God'. You will believe the way you live your life, the way you pray and everything else is the 'right way', its the way its supposed to be. Because obviously you wouldn't do it if it didn't make sense to you and you felt it was wrong because you're not an idiot. Now if you're doing the right thing, everyone who follows another religion must be an idiot, because they're doing it wrong Considering there is no religion which is followed by the majority (>50%) is it safe to say most religious people are idiots in the eyes of religious people? :hmmmm: Discuss.
CricketGirl Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 :haha: i was looking forward to a juicy debate! oh well!!
Lurker Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Indeed. You can not have 2 religious people(of different religion) sitting in the room and both be right. One has to be wrong, but which one? It is for this reason that followers of most religion are indoctrinated to never doubt their beleifs. In Arabic there is even a word that suggests the state of mind when a Muslim is unsure about his beleif(fitna comes to mind but not sure about it). However there is a key difference between Abrhaminical religion and Eastern philosphies. Abrahaminical religion are based on concept of 1 God. And it is amazing how Muslims, Christians, Jews follow the same philosphy and kill each other. Eastern philoshpies, on the other hand, are not so much tied down by 1 God rigidity. Hence Eastern religions, by and large, are lot more peaceful towards other religion. It is not surprising to see photos of Kabba and Christ in an Hindu place but would be hardpressed to see it the other way around. To your point though yes it is stupid to think all religious people are right, cos they simply can not be. xxx
youngindia Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hence Eastern religions, by and large, are lot more peaceful towards other religion. The behaviour of human beings does not translate as you said.violence is due to communalism. communalism is more a sociopolitcal ideology and used for socio politcal purposes. think about it. . the major violence (due to religion) occurs when 1 people fight for political control with relgiion based considerations 2 use politcal control to intimidate other people 3 a sociial dispute that spirals out. the terms politcal islam and poltical christianity should come into mind.politcal islam is still thriving in the islamic world while west has started dispensing with political christianity after enlightenment. political usage of religion has caused a great deal of havoc in subcontinent and in srilanka as well. as the sangh parivar and the SL govts have shown, if "eastern philosophy" followers use religion for politcal purposes, it can be as destructive. religion as followed at a personal level and as a consideration at sociopoltical level(that causes violence mostly) are not necessarily same. what i meant was people can folow religion diligently at a personal level but still be a constructive contributor to public peace at social level. equally you can be athesit at personal level but be an unhealthy contributor to peace at social level(e.g savarkar-agnostic)i
CricketGirl Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 There are many ways to the same destination. :dito: what makes people live together in harmony is the idea of "live and let live" so just because ones beliefs are different to another it doesnt make either wrong!
Lurker Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 political usage of religion has caused a great deal of havoc in subcontinent and in srilanka as well. as the sangh parivar and the SL govts have shown, if "eastern philosophy" followers use religion for politcal purposes, it can be as destructive. Fair point about politicization of religion. However there is a difference between simply utilizing religion for political benefits and utilizing religion for sanctioning these political benefits. Yes BJP/RSS and what I call bhagwa loony brigade are responsible for politicizing religion(Hinduism) but you will rarely see them use Hinduism to justify a killing. On the other hand Abrhaminical religion have that stigma attached to them. Right from Crusades to modern day Wahabbism its all done in the name of Christ, and Mohammed. xxxx

But there is more to all religions than just reaching god, plus the fact everyone seems to have a different god, who is described very differently in the different religions.
CricketGirl Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 But there is more to all religions than just reaching god' date=' plus the fact everyone seems to have a different god, who is described very differently in the different religions.[/quote'] yeah i agree with that!! i need to go out so'll address this one later!
youngindia Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 the big question is is a intolerent person always a threat to public peace? actually no, if he restricts these views to private lilfe and space alone!. however if 1. he supports a socio politcal organisation promoting public hatred 2. promotes prejudice and stereotypes to society by bringing them into the public space. he is a threat to public peace. here too, if a atheist or a tolerant guy supports the bigoted organisations (for whatever reasons), he is also contributing to endangering public peace! key point - personal life is of little or no concern.its your public behaviour and its implications for public peace.
yoda Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 But there is more to all religions than just reaching god' date=' plus the fact everyone seems to have a different god, who is described very differently in the different religions.[/quote'] There is a difference between what a religion is meant to be and what people (mis)use it for. I personally have no respect for a religion which does not respect another.
Lurker Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 key point - personal life is of little or no concern.its your public behaviour and its implications for public peace. In modern world what really is personal? Take a staunch Hindu Brahmin. As per your assertion it is okay if he rabidly dislikes every non-Hindu person so long as it is not out in the open. Fair enough. What happens tomorrow when he has a child? Do you think this person would be at comfort watching him\her mingle with non-Hindus? And what happens when the time comes to marriage? Do you sincerely think he shall keep his religious obligations to himself and marry his child to say a Muslim? Reality obviously is different. I personally dont attest to this whole "personal" thingy simply because it is all good to be friends, and remain civil in a society. But when we talk of deeper relationships like getting married or having a child people leave their personal interest and go back to the religious recluse. xxx

Temujin Khaghan Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 i have this theory that the guy who is himself not very sure about his own religion, his practices and is having a lot of self-doubts hates or dislikes other religions more than a stauch beliver or lets say a true beliver of his own faith. i never found any of my christian teachers at school belittling my religion in the open or anything like that... but i have this relation of mine who has turned to christianity recently utter a lot of nonsense and being a lot intolerant towards hindu customs. she turned to christianity for monetery reasons and like i said may be if there was a person who turns to another religion or believes in his own faith whole heartedly, then he/she wouldnt really have this "we are on the right track and the non-believers are gonna goto hell" kinda belief. in short - the guy who has doubts about his own religion fears/hates the other religion the most.

But if you choose to worship someone, you believe you have chosen the right path and the right god, if someone else is worshipping someone else, they must be idiots, because you're god is the real deal, their god is fake and therefore they're idiots for worshipping a non-existent god
