Desi Cartman Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 The funny thing is that you are generalising the Indian society based on something that happened to your relative but are taking umbrage when the families of Indians attacked or the media accuse your beloved Australia of inaction against these 'not related to race' (:hysterical:) crimes. And based on your 'logic' (because it also happens in India we should bow down and let the Aussies thrash us and not say a word), if this relative of yours who got beaten up has a brother who beats his wife, then she has no right to complain and should suffer the beatings in silence. BTW didn't Australia have an only white immigration policy until the 70s? How multicultural. I am related to someone who had all this happen to her, do you think i'll use that to put India down ? I hv myself been attacked in Aus cuz of my race , so why would i think Aussies are all good ? I am just wondering why is it more important to an avg Indian when a white kills an indian but not when a male kicks a female in the middle of the market.. BTW yes Im an Indian male and maybe Im also part of the problem but im not blaming anyone, im just trying to understand why is it that we are like this .. I am still a little shaken , confused so Im sorry if it seemed that Im defending Aus govt ...
EnterTheVoid Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Sree is a glorified wrist slitter who would do anything to put India and its community in the bad light to show Australia is a safe haven for Indians. But desi, giving out same opinion as Sree is quite illogical. Gunner has asked before what does this issue have to do with anything that goes in India ? We are talking about Australia, who are claiming Australia as a safe land for Indian students (who in turn are helping the Aussie economy, IIRC Indian students contribute $2bn/year). Even if we consider the attacks are not racially motivated, what exactly has the Australian/Melbourne police done to inquire why the victims are Indians (in most of the cases) ? About 1,447 Indians were victims of reported crime in Victoria, do you guys really believe these were opportunistic street crime ? Believe what you want to believe, there is nothing I can say that will convice you or any else otherwise. I tried my best.

Im not seeing Aus or India .. thats y I asked what i did . I better get some sleep, its 4 am PS: I also have a case registered in Sydney cuz someone punched me 6-7 yrs ago , he was caught on camera and i'm still waiting for the NSW police to call me
The Outsider Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Without commenting on these specific attacks on Indians too much, which on the surface do appear to have at least some racial motivation, I would comment upon the nefarious racist policies of Australia just till 30 odd years back. They had institutionalized racism till that time, kids from aborigines were taken away by the government, and immigration was only for whites. If someone thinks that all these practices can be eradicated from the minds and hearts within a generation then are living a pipe dream.
yoda Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Isn't it rather ironic that the two Indians who are living in Australia are fine with the things there, just those of us outside are outraged. :questionmark:

In all those years, and I can only speake for myself, the possibility of being racially attacked never bothered me. Don't misinterpret that as saying such attacks don't happen. They do happen, but not to the extent thats being falsely portrayed. Its a real shame that such a country is portrayed as a nation of rabid, racist, white - supremacist thugs, which is as far from the truth as pluto is from the sun. If you are planning on coming to Australia, would you listen to those who live here or those from a newspaper reporter who got his information from someone who knows someone who knows someone ? People believe what they want to believe. Let it be. C'est la vie.

I have been living here for 10 years , yes there are racists and yes there is a problem. 3 things need to happen *Police needs to do a lot more *Indians need to stay alert, move from bad neighborhoods *Indian media should not report anything unconfirmed, like last 2 cases have already been tagged as racist attacks and they very well maybe but can't they wait for cops to do the investigations ? If If you are planning to come to Aus , then IMO take it easy and avoid coming to melbourne atm. Its not like people beat you up when you go for a walk but its more expensive to live in a good neighborhood in Mel than maybe Brisbane or Adelaide. Correct me if Im wrong but people in Eng or US know that its not safe to go to a neighborhood after dark , that u should always drive late in the night , avoid dark -dangerous areas... well in Melbourne I never had to worry about it. I used finish work and catch public transport after midnight.. did that for first 3 years in Melbourne but things are different now and we need to accept it.

Can't disagree with much there, times are changing and people need to accept that, the country is not the same it was 10 years ago. As for institutionalized racism based on policies of the past, why single out Australia when; 1. South Africa had the apartheid movement 2. America had the civil rights movement
graphic23 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Well, why should anyone bring it up when the attacks in question are happening in Australia and NOT India, South Africa, or the US? This rationalization of "its happened everywhere so this shouldn't make the headlines" is quite stupid.
I_India Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I am not much of an Indian but even I am am shocked by the excuses that some are making here! Anyway interesting post by an Aussie on another forum regarding one of the stabbings- It happened at a Hungry Jacks restaurant Which is what Burgerking had to rename themselves to because the name was already taken when they first opened up here. Anyway its only 5 minutes drive from where I live down geelong road and I was kinda shocked seeing someone murdered at the same shop where I use to buy my whoppers. I used to pedal down there ripped of my tits on weed and speed with a Hungry jacks coupon book in my hand. 4 whoppers for 8 bucks... Ahh to be young and carefree again. Anyway the Indians here are seen as being weak by the other ethnic groups like Vietnamese, Africans, Lebo's and Bogans/yobbos, you know what I mean, Lower class Australians! And they always cop it from hard from these groups. Its funny to see Indians walk around here because they are usually in groups of 10-15 people and they always try to look hard and intimidating which is funny because they are only Indians They have my sympathy though because out of all the ethnic groups here I think they do the least damage to the country compared to the others. They are certainly no where near as bad as the Viets and the Niggers here. The push up thread explains why people take us to be weak! As a whole we are too busy eating fatty food. World is like a bad forest. Bambis will always get hunted.
99.94 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Suggesting that Australia cops are racists is just ridiculous. It's up to the Indians to avoid dangerous areas. I mean I (an Anglo Aussie) would not walk through many areas of Melbourne by myself. Perhaps the city where it is crowded I may, but even then I have seen plenty of fights in there. I wouldn't walk through Canberra (a city with low crime) at night by myself, you are just asking for trouble. Thousands of Indians come to Australia and I think 97 percent of them would be happy and feel safe and welcomed. It's a shame that now Australia now has a reputation of being an unsafe and racist country. I guess all they can do is put more police on duty..

I am quoting your post here, but I guess the reply would be equally applicable to desi and 99.94's posts. I, nor most here, are remotely suggesting that everyone or even majority of the Aussies are racists. However, what I've noticed a very strong defense mechanism which pops up in Aussies when discussing racism. I've been in the US for many years now and would have no problems in accepting that pockets of the US are racist. Not New York, not coastal California, but I have experienced racism in the interiors first hand. Does it make US a racist country? I would say no, but it certainly shows that racism has been far from eradicated here. The problem by all accounts is more acute in Australia. Just look at cricketing examples - McGrath, Lehmann, the crowd. All have been guilty of racism. It's not going to go away by pretending everything is fine. And yes, the roots lie in legacy of institutionalized racism and is not going to go away anytime in the near future. It took Germany years to get rid of it
99.94 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 There are plenty of racists. Usually all the bogans and dropkicks.
fuub Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 i think the hysteria is good in the long run. slow the influx of indians migrating into oz might help perhaps there was just too many at one time. I've also heard that it is harder to get a visa into oz from india now as they increased the level of scrutiny and closed a few loopholes. if the indian goverment is unhappy with australians police efforts perhaps both countries could fund a bailout and fly indians who dont want to stay anymore back home, then everyone is happy? http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/tougher-rules-for-indian-students/story-e6frgcjx-1111117374475
Macj Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 America is the place to be for higher studies, sorry but Australia doesnt measure up to the freedoms the good ol USA offers. The heart and soul ALWAYS looks out for India, but the mind is in America.

Australia is a weird choice for Indian students, its a choice for loser Indian students. Those that dont get aid in US universities choose Australia just TGTFO. The returns on an American education is much better than that on an Australian education. Just saying.
Rajiv Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Too much talk on race, if a society is racists - its racists..they can accept foreigners mostly due to interests with suit them, but you can change the psyche. The point here is Law and Order, they have to do "lot" more to protect Indian Students. it's getting too much of a coincidence that Indians are being attacked every now and then

Cmon dude, that statement is not right But I can tell you one thing, the thought process goes this way " Aree USA nahin hain to Australia ha na" ( I knew at-least 2 folks who said that on my face ) Its all not that bad, its got good Hotel/Tourism Schools there
