Government to ban Islam4UK under terror laws

A radical Islamist group that planned a march through Wootton Bassett will be banned under counter-terrorism laws, Home Secretary Alan Johnson has said. Islam4UK had planned the protest at the Wiltshire town to honour Muslims killed in the Afghanistan conflict. The government had been considering outlawing the group - Islam4UK is also known as al-Muhajiroun. A spokesman for al-Muhajiroun told the BBC the group is "nothing more than a think tank and a pressure group". Mr Johnson said: "I have today laid an order which will proscribe al-Muhajiroun, Islam4UK, and a number of the other names the organisation goes by. "It is already proscribed under two other names - al-Ghurabaa and The Saved Sect. "Proscription is a tough but necessary power to tackle terrorism and is not a course we take lightly. "We are clear that an organisation should not be able to circumvent proscription by simply changing its name." Under the Terrorism Act 2000, a group can be banned if it "commits or participates in acts of terrorism, prepares for, promotes or encourages terrorism or is otherwise concerned in terrorism". Groups can also be outlawed if they "unlawfully glorify the commission or preparation of acts of terrorism". Speaking from Lebanon, Omar Bakri Muhammad, founder of al-Muhajiroun, told the BBC: "It will increase the popularity of al-Muhajiroun and increase the membership, and I think it is a grave mistake because it will force them underground and he is playing with fire. "It is nothing more than a think tank and a pressure group of students, they are never involved in any violence." On Sunday Islam4UK cancelled the march and issued a statement from spokesman Anjem Choudary, saying it had "successfully highlighted the plight of Muslims in Afghanistan". "We at Islam4UK have decided, after consultation with others including our Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, that no more could be achieved even if a procession were to take place in Wootton Bassett," he said. The group denied members had planned to carry 500 empty coffins through the town. The banning order will come into effect on Thursday and make it a criminal offence to be a member, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. But at least some action is being taken al-Muhajiroun has been a known terror organization and had been operating for a while, once they became known, they changed their name to Islam4UK and were operating freely, making ludicrous statements and people have been doing nothing about it. I agree with you, not much will probably happen, but at least people realise they are a problem.

yeah i guess this has created the awareness of their actions! but unfortunately they're going to victimise themselves with the whole "oh look at us no one wants to support our good course" and drum up even more support it goes back to the whole bad publicity being better than no publicity!

while i support the right to free speech, rather, i must say, i vehemently support the right to free speech, past experiences have suggested that will alarming consistency, any gathering of muslim activists leads to eventual extremism. it seems ruddy impossible for a moderate, progressive islamic movement to exist at all! nontheless, i do not agree with the decision.

Well they will be banned so something will actually happen of this. And I dont think it increses theire publicity in a way thats going to be good for them. The people who would have joined them would either join regardless or be memebers already, my point being its not going to get them any 'new' members they would not have got otherwise. Now that theyre illegal it means many will be deterred. As a Brit Muslim I cant say how happy I am. These guys are nutjobs and all they wanted from that march was publicity. Im all for expression of opinion and freedom of speech, and the point they said they wanted to make with that march was a good one - but theres a way to go about it The fact that these guys wanted their march in THAT town tells us all we need to know- one of their main aims was to cause a ruckus. They do nothing but soil the image and name of muslims in the UK.

Two parallels here: One with Islam4UK and the BNP, both rightwing ****jobs. We had a discussion about that Question Time ep and how it gave BNP publicity. It did, but not the kind of publicity that will get them new members because everybody who follows their ideology will join anyway- if anything it will put some 'undecideds' off altogther. Similar scenario for Islam4UK really. Theyve shot themselves in the foot as the point their trying to make- a good one, about muslims being killed by the dozens in Afghanistan- has been drowned by the controversy about the way they are going about it. The other parralel is with the Danish cartoons ep from a few years ago, there again everybody was all for it because of free speech etc. Boll.ocks. That paper did it almost TO rile muslims, and succeeded. Similarly these guys want to rile the wider UK community and deserve to be banned for good.

Wouldn't you rather say "afghans" killed by the dozens in Afghanistan? This is the factor about the Islamic world which most surprises me. Why the identification with the religion rather than with the nation? Don't take it as a personal rebuke, its more of a generic question.

I have seen innumerable comments, jokes and cartoons about Jesus and christianity and no one is riled up by that. Why only the muslims? I see this problem also with Indians these days who have become too touchy and thin skinned for their own good. If a culture is unable to laugh at itself then we have a serious problem.

Look up XKCD ....they periodically post cartoons about Jesus, there are numerous other comic strips that make fun of christianity, scientologists, mormons .... there has been numerous articles criticizing bible and the flaws and the outdated notions....yet you don't see any of that when it comes to Islam...everyone is afraid to criticize Islam...why is that? in the recent 2012 movie...they showed statue of Jesus crashing, Vatican city being destroyed but they didn't show Mecca in fear of uprising and riots from brainwashed masses.

For my money, I think the radical Islamic movement in UK has already grown too big, and the so called normal-muslims in UK are doing very little to prevent a backlash from the native English people. That is one POV. However, Britain is one of the most tolerant countries in the world and reaps great benefits from being so. Most people living here wouldn't have it otherwise. Yet, Britain is safer than USA, and has less race violence than Italy or France, who are more right wing in their attitude to immigrants. There is no doubt that the Labour government deliberately followed a policy of increased immigration to boost their vote bank. However, as many Indians benefited from it as Pakistanis, and the biggest influx was from eastern Europeans, not South Asians.
