maggot_brain Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 A Bangladeshi taxi driver in New York City has gone out of his way to track down the person who left thousands of dollars in cash in the back of his cab. Mukul Asadujjaman, a medical student, drove nearly 80kms (50 miles) to an address he found with the money. He left his phone number when he found no one at home. The money belonged to an Italian grandmother visiting the US. Mr Asadujjaman was offered a reward, but he turned it down saying that as a devout Muslim he could not accept it. Felicia Lettieri, of Pompeii, Italy, and six relatives had taken two cabs on Christmas Eve, Newsday newspaper reported. Mrs Lettieri, 72, left her purse behind, with more than $21,000 of the group's travelling money, jewellery worth thousands more, and some of their passports. Her sister, Francesca Lettieri, 79, of Long Island, said the honest driver had saved her family's vacation. "We really love what he did," she said. 'Be honest' A gracious Asadujjaman was quoted by the newspaper as saying that he may be broke, but he was also honest. "My mother is my inspiration. She always said to be honest and work hard." Mr Asadujjaman called a friend with a car and drove some 80km to a Long Island address in the purse. No one was at home, so he left his phone number and a note, the report said. His phone rang a short time later and he drove back to return the bag. "They were so, so, so happy," Mr Asadujjaman told the paper. Asked if he was tempted to keep the cash, Mr Asadujjaman said the money would have allowed him more time to study, "but my heart said this is not good". He also turned down a reward, saying he could not accept it as a devout Muslim, Newsday reported. "I'm needy, but I'm not greedy," he said. "It's better to be honest." Mr Asadujjaman is not the first honest American-Bangladeshi cabbie to hit the headlines for noble behaviour. A lot of the Bangladeshis I've met despite being devout muslims see no problem in fraternising with Hindus or even visiting mandirs. Can you see a Pakistani having that sort of attitude? Remember these guys died for the right to use their language: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengali_Language_Movement That mother *****er Jinnah and his cronies declared Urdu to be the official language of Pakistan despite the majority of the population at the time being Bengali speakers. East Pakistan was more populous than the western part. Then there was all this crap about Bengali being a 'Hindu language' because the writing system is not Persian-Arabic derived.

Then there was all this crap about Bengali being a 'Hindu language' because the writing system is not Persian-Arabic derived. you wont like it if i say something bad about gandhi, would you? which i never will, because gandhi did work in the favour of everyone, and even as a pakistani i respect his struggle for india and its nothing to do with bangali and pakistani culture and people, the reason he has given for the honesty is that as a muslim thats how it should be, and you should praise atleast for this thread islam than come out bashing at pakistan, what if you have to compare this to indian vs begnlai, and why didnt you. if a muslim do good thing people look at it anything other than islam but if a muslim does bad thing, main target is islam, why? it can be individuals when it comes to suicide bombings then why doesnt someone on icf say that in the threads of suicide bombings :icflove:

I suppose I did bash Pakistan somewhat but that wasn't really my main intention. I was merely contrasting the different attitudes of Bangladeshis and Pakistanis that I've personally witnessed. The fact remains though Bangladeshis and Pakistanis are mainly muslims yet my experience of Bangladeshis is that they are more open-minded and affable than Pakistanis (never mind shutki maach). Muslims the world over are not all the same. A North African is culturally very different from a South Asian even though they may share the same religion. The BBC article itself points to a positive portrayal of Islam - the taxi driver in question even referred to his religion as the reason he didn't keep the money or accept a reward.
