DHAKA: In another day of high performance, Indian contingent increased its medal tally with six gold, one silver and four bronze medals to end with a total haul of 11 gold, one silver and five bronze medals on the fourth day of the 11th South Asian Games here on Monday. Superb showing in judo where India bagged three gold and a bronze, clean sweep in the badminton team event which fetched India two gold, a gold and a bronze in 50 km road race mass start for women and a couple of bronze medals in squash gave India the momentum in the race for lead in medal’s tally. That India failed to win a single medal in the over 100kg men event in judo was the talking point rather than India winning three gold and a bronze from five categories in which competition was held. The unfortunate Indian was Yaima Singh who finished fifth while the rest four got onto the podium. Akram Shah took the gold in the 60 kg for men downing Zafar Iqbal of Pakistan. In the two events for ladies, India ruled supreme as Ningthoujam Gomti Chanu powered past Sri Lanka’s Chamila Dilhani Wijerathne in the 52 kg class. Lourembam Brojeshori Devi made it two out of two by claiming the 63kg category by stopping Fouzia Mumtaz of Pakistan in the final. The lone bronze medal came from Krishna Kumar in the 66kg for men. The event was won by Pakistan’s Aiatulla and the silver went to Sri Lanka’s Chandana Jayantha Bandara. Mahitha Mohan gave India the cycling gold winning the women’s 50 km roar race mass start in a time of 1:25.42s ahead of her Sri Lankan rival. Renowned Chabungbam Rameshori Devi missed the silver by a second as she clocked 1:28.35s as against the silver medal fetching time of 1:28.34s. The lone Indian to figure in the weightlifting hall, Chandrakant Dadu Mali, came second best to Usman Ajmal of Pakistan in the men’s 94 kg weight class. At the Sport Council Gymnasium Hall, Mali lifted 312 kg in snatch and clean-jerk, 18 kg behind Ajmal whose gold medal fetching total lift was 330 kg. Sri Lanka settled for the bronze. First gold Bangladesh picked up its first gold when Hamada Islam won 77 kg category. Bangladesh had a 1-2 finish with Manoranjon Roy taking the silver. Bronze went to Mustafa Muhammad of Afghanistan. India earned two more bronze medals from squash as the losing semifinalists, Gaurav Nandrajog and Sandeep Jangra, were awarded bronze medals. The gold went to Amir Atlas Khan and his compatriot Farhan Mehboob of Pakistan took the silver. Indian kabaddi, handball and basketball teams kept up their march towards the title round. The men’s kabaddi team downed Pakistan 19-15.
