Absolutely. Greatness is always comparative. It does not exist in silo. The best in the business is simply put better than everyone else out there. Sobers greatness would lie in the fact that he was the most complete cricketer. Purely for fielding he would be one of the very best ever. Remember how Sunny Gavaskar in his first International trip (71 Windies) thought his series would be fruitful if he could witness two incidents:
  • Falling hook shot by Rohan Kanhai
  • Sharp slip catch by Sobers

The man was that good. As a batsman he was good enough to score heavily against all types of attacks. I beleive his average in India is still the best amongst overseas batsmen. His runs in England, both in Test and County, are splendid and he managed good run in Australia as well where he and Kanhai essentially helped bring back a lot of focus back in domestic cricket. So yeah a great cricketer and someone who could take on the fastest bowler on fastest track without a helmet and still score 250 plus.

That doesn't preclude future observers from comparing batsman from different eras though. Granted it's hard but not totally fruitless.

The problem here though is that Lurks ( or anyone here for that matter) hasnt watched Sobers bat other than in the video clip. Ditto with DGB . And there certainly is no shortage of accolades from experts for SRT. So the only thing that can explain this pathological dislike bordering on hatred for SRT is personal dislike or complete brainwashing based on reading past stories.
Or it can make you appear like a complete tool. :giggle: Where has anyone said anything about Sachin Tendulkar? Why are you so paranoid about Sachin that every thread has to revolve around him? Anything sort of "He is Greatest" and the poster has a pathological dislike bordering on hatred? :giggle:

was that Lurker who said that?? IIRC he wanted to know how much Sachin will avearge Lulzers.

A lot rate him as the best ever player. Great with the bat, good with the ball and an excellent fielder. Has to be the greatest player and his stats back it up as well. I'm quite sure he would have done very well in ODIs as well, he was an aggressive player. He had the highest individual test runs against his name for a very long time and he could bowl all sorts as well. Terrific captain as well and led his team quite well. Versatile player and clearly ahead of the pack in my opinion. If you are going to be choosing the greatest player that was equally good at everything it has to be Sobers.

Man if you think Yuvraj is a better player than Sir Gary, then you have a lot to learn.......Sobers was not the most elegant left hander, but Yuvi has done jack shyte in tests......Back in those days it took at bigger swing of the bat to hit a four or six. Almost all batsmen had big flourishes. Just becuase one's batting looks elegant means nothing. Wasim Jaffer looks elegant, but has sh*t technique
