Chandan Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Massive, unprecedented clean-up in Pak cricket 10 Mar 2010, 1225 hrs IST In a huge blow for Pakistan cricket, the nation’s Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday (March 10) took ‘severe’ action against its top players for their poor performance in the Australian tour. After an inquiry held by the National Sports Committee, veteran batsman Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan have been slapped with a lifetime ban. Meanwhile, Shoaib Malik and pacer Rana Naveedul Hassan have been banned for one year. The Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar, who were found guilty of defying the Board’s orders, have been fined a sum of US $ 5 million. Apart from these top players, all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who was involved in a ball-tampering incident, was fined also fined and will be kept under probation for 6 months. Calling it a gigantic step, Rameez Raja, a veteran cricket commentator said, “It is surprising, but at the end of the day the problem for the team has been discipline. PCB needed to make an example and took a step to clean up the lack of discipline in the team. Are they the 2 match fixers? or is this for non-performance? You dont ban a player for bad performance, so this has to be something big, right?

King Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 On another note, Pakistan cricket is racing towards destruction. I think they are finished as a cricketing nation. They are not too far off from Zimbabwe kind of cricket politics. I won't be surprised if the board is dissolved and the players are allowed back. That will present a different type of problem, players with ego will hammer Pakistan's cricket ala Akthar and Afridi. I feel there is no way out for Pakistan in cricket, not for the next decade at least.

Geez... what's wrong with the Pakistani players. They play one good series and then start behaving like they rule the world. Inzi and Younis I guess were pretty down to earth but the rest are a bunch of back stabbers. I guess there could be more to the life bans though. Anyone with sane head would know for building groupism you don't ban players for life. I think there's something more serious PCB may be trying to sweep under the carpet.

DomainK Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 It's a sort of coup following all the intense power games for the last some years. It remains to be seen who the coup is on behalf of. I have a feeling that Afridi will be the biggest beneficiary of this coup. He will become the captain now and unlike his predecessors who faced serious team politics because of groupism, Afridi will have no impediments as someone is sweeping the road ahead of Afridi. This is a serious clean up job to ensure the next rule lasts long. But cricket will suffer, no doubt.
