akshayxyz Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 so anyone who chooses not to blindly follow "the legend of Sir Don Bradman" is stupid?? Also - at least Sachin fans can claim to have seen him - for 20+ years. Bradman - 99.94 - what else?
CSK Fan Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 The thing abt other batsmen is that you have to "pick and chose" to make them avg 100, while Bradman just does that with his career avg Also in trying to match Bradman, many forget the gap b/w Bradman and his peers. In trying to pick and chose, many forget to use common sense. For example, picking grounds is a pointless exercise (why not pick grounds for Ponting, Lara, etc as well and then compare them to see which one tripumps based on those criterias). The exercise of showing Sachin(or whoever) > Bradman is nothing more than an exercise to show how stupid those following Sachin (or whoever) are .... As they say, love is blind :P Duh, the very reason why people pick and chose is because Bradman's sample size is so small that it gives him an unfair advantage. Picking and chosing is to show that with such a small size of grounds and opposition, many batsmen can have incredible figures You keep on repeating about peers till the cows come home but the fact will remain that Bradman's peers and Sachin's peers were not the same people so comparing Sachin to Bradman based on dominating their respective peers doesnt prove anything. For all you know Sachin would have dominated Bradman's peer by a bigger margin while Bradman might have fared worse against Sachin's peers. Unless you can prove that Sachin and Bradman's peers were equal in quality, talking about the gap between Bradman and his peers doesnt make sense
zen Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 so anyone who chooses not to blindly follow "the legend of Sir Don Bradman" is stupid?? It's the stupid reasons, including making up stuff, that many give to show that legend is not a legend that makes them stupid, esp when those presenting those stuff have Sachin in avatar or username like that :P Such fans, imo, are not true cricket fans I am probably one of the biggest Sachin fans and followed almost his whole career. His biggest strength is that he has been probably the most consistent batsman amongst his peers. You will usually find Sachin amongst the top 5 batsmen in a given period. But over a period, I have seen many batsmen match or out do Sachin, be it Lara or Pointing or Dravid or Waugh. The strength of Sachin, as I said before, is that he is usually able to compete with the best in his era consistently throughout his career. 1989-1993 1994-1999 1999-2003 2004-2008 2009-present compare that to: 1928-1933 1934-1937 1938-1948 There are those who build temples for actress like Khusboo so I can understand the fan following for Tendulkar but just like I would say no to a temple for Khusboo, I would say the same toTendulkar being hailed as the greatest batsman. Manipulating stats or trying to reduce others won't change things. Tendulkar is one of the all-time greats, there is no doubt in that fact. But the best test batsman ever is Sir Don Bradman, there is no doubt in that fact too :winky: 2 cents
Sachinism Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 The debate was well and truly done and dusted when the videos surfaced .... but just incase you still have some doubts check these out : http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=61713 http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=74603 Let me know if you want me to elaborate on who is bowling to who. You're trying to convince the wrong person. People have already made up their minds and are not going to budge an inch, so its pointless bringing up these things over and over again, cause the same arguments will be regurgitated

akshayxyz Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 @Rett. So strongest argument in Bradman's favor is peer domination..right? How do you defend/argue-against that, "40% ( random ) better than peers" in Don's era is better/worse than "2.5% (random) better than peers" in highly competitive modern era???

Hahahah wathcing that for the first time!! seriously he could've killed te likes of Shoiab Akthar had he batted today
Precambrian Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 read somewhere there was only 1 bowler who averaged less than 27 then in bradman days. against 20-30 in sachin's time.
Sachin=GOD Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 ok ... for a moment i thought you had relapsed :P It is one thing to be able to shout but quite another thing to back that up with logic. I mean who in the right mind thinks that the cricket that is on display in those videos qualifies those cricketers to be put alongside the modern greats in terms of pure skill ? Just because its a free world and that people are allowed to shout doesn't make it a fact. Its a free world so everyone is allowed to think that their "opinion" is "fact" :winky: even though in many cases that "opinion" is just a legend that has been hammered into the minds of people again and again and again over the last 70 odd years. It will take time but slowly this legend will die down and people will actually start believing in a cricketer they have seen rather than one about whom they've only heard/read.

How do you defend/argue-against that, "40% ( random ) better than peers" in Don's era is better/worse than "2.5% (random) better than peers" in highly competitive modern era??? Some factors that makes Bradman the greatest batsman: 1. peer domination 2. batting records like 300 in a day (exceptional SR) 3. highest number of 100s per innings 4. unmatched avg of 100, after 50 tests and 20 years of playing cricket Bradman shouldn't be compared with others. And you only have to take a bunch of cricketers to compare the quality. Unless the implication is that even someone like Rameez Raja is better than all-time greats like Hammond. LINK Cricinfo World XI: Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Garry Sobers, Adam Gilchrist, Malcolm Marshall, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Dennis Lillee Cricinfo, The Second XI: Sunil Gavaskar, Barry Richards, George Headley, Brian Lara, Wally Hammond, Imran Khan, Alan Knott, Bill O'Reilly, Fred Trueman, Muttiah Muralitharan, SF Barnes If fingers are raised against someone like Bradman, then rest assured they can be raised against Tendulkar to the point where it can be difficult to say he is better than the likes of Lara or Richards or Sobers. Personally, I rate Sobers as #2 (after Bradman)

You talked about batting records - do I really need to go into the many, many, many records he has created in Tests & ODIs?? you talked about 100s per innings - 99 centuries in 733 innings across two versions of the game in a career spanning 21 years while playing in over 100 grounds against more than 500 different bowlers spreading over 4 generations - if that ain't enough then I don't know what is.
