^ he was'nt always this bad. Its really in the past few months that his bowling has deteriorated quite drastically. He was bowling well till about Feb-March this year and then suddenly he's become an ordinary sort of bowler.

He looked completely off-color in the entire test. The best possible indicator of his mental state probably came surprisingly not from his bowling, but his batting and fielding. Right till the time he came on to the crease, the commentators, both Aussie and British, were bigging him up as this talented batsmen who could score some useful runs. But his batting was completely devoid of any confidence or intent. He just sort of hung in there till he got bowled. And then there was the dropped chance from the bat of Strauss. That might have been a difficult catch for an Indian fielder, but for the Aussies, they generally gobble them up with their eyes closed. That spill showed the mental state of mind Johnson finds himself him right now. With the Adelaide test match to start in less than 72 hours, it is difficult to see how Johnson could possibly turn this around. But, to make matters worse for the selectors, he went into Gabba test as their attack leader. How can you possibly call someone the leader of your attack, only to drop him one match later? My guess is, they will give him one more match to see if he has it in him to turn things around. They HAVE to bring in Bollinger, surely. That guy is simply too good to let England score 500 runs for the loss of one wicket. He might not have picked any more wickets, but when Douggie is bowling, there’s at least a chance of something happening. They will probably replace Doherty with Smith, which is tough love for the debutant.

One thing that we can make out from his short career is that no one else who can bowl at 155 kmph has ever been such a wuss. Maybe Sami but he cant bowl that phasht anymore.

All that comes in a package. He's something like a Sehwag of bowling. Strangely like Sehwag, he thrives on drier wickets and takes time to adapt to new ball friendly conditions simply because he never had a decent seam position. Having said that, there is a definite pattern to his bowling and the mistakes that he makes. His full deliveries are way wide of the right handers and cut away a bit so batsmen either leave them or risk edging them. The short ones are either right at the face or slightly down the leg side depending on how short they are and at his pace you better duck under them. And his length deliveries are usually right in line and cutting or reversing away a bit (those were the ones that caused the Pakistanis all sorts of problems). All of this can actually be explained by his round arm action and varying points of release. It also explains why he could be useless against left handers as he's often been (against Strauss and Cook in the earlier part of the ashes and vettori and co here). Anyway, as long as there is a pattern to the shite that he bowls its fine and you can set fields for it, its all fine imo. And he's gotto be in the side because of the unplayable deliveries that he can produce at any point.

fbm, as always, is right with his bowling opinions. Batsmen have figured out how to play Johnson and that's to leave his deliveries that are wide outside simply becaue he hasnt shown the consistency and accuracy to be able to move the ball into batsmen. Until he does that he's going to remain a hit and largely miss bowler.

I will play Johnson in the next Test for sure. Even the best of bowlers will have an occasional bad game where they might have gone wicketless and looked off color. I would bring in one of Bollinger/Harris, personally Harris in place of Hilfenhaus and go with Siddle, Harris, Johnson combination for the 2nd Ashes Test.

he has always been mediocre bowler really ,should have been obvious if some of them cud see beyond stats here. the only thing going for him , is that he can bowl really quick when hes in good rhythm ..fluked most of his 60+ wickets in the season where hes was ranked the top bowler , half of them was due to how well siddle was bowling at the other end ..not surprisingly hes been found out .

hmm..An if and a should have squeezed in there. When he once is ranked as the top bowler in the world it can be attributed to fluke. Nice.
