The absurdity behind nominating Lara as the best batsman of his generation

Lara can never go into the legends book of cricket. His game has always been in controversy not outside cricket but inside cricket, it is the manner he scored the runs? His 400s is a clear example of it, I remember his previous record was recently broken by Hayden, so he took that match as a captain playing only for his individual record, never decleared the innings and ultimately was just a draw for the team. There were tons of accusation afterwards about this and most of his career.

My personal ranking from batsmen in the last 15 years: 1. Ricky Ponting : has fallen away in the last year but for a long time was among the best batsmen in the world if not THE best. from 2000 to 2008 has the best average of any batsman in test cricket. For me he slightly edges Tendulkar for only one reason. He was a joy to watch and I would wait to just watch him play those pull shots, cover drives and hooks. The most entertaining batsman ever for me. And he's a 3 time World Cup winner. 2. Sachin Tendulkar: Only slightly behind Ponting for me and tha too mainly because unlike Ponting there are several innings from him which have bored me a lot. He's a run machine and probably the person to give the bat to save your life but comes second on my rating because he was never as entertaining for me and nor does he have any unbelievable trademark shots. Prolly will be a World Cup winner come Saturday and deserves to have atleast one winners medal before he retires. Ponting has 3 and it would have been unfair that Tendulkar didnt get one. 3. Lara: The numbers point to him but I never really liked his shuffling technique and for me he was not as consistent as the other 2

Ponting is nowhere in the league of Lara leave alone SRT . Ponting only became a run machine when most of the fast bowlers of his era retired , he has achieved nothing significant in the 90s and had the best bowling attack playing for him , not against him . Never been able to conquer spinning tracks in India contrary to performance of SRT in Australian pitches , SRT performed consistently in Australia while Ricky even after so many tours to India still looks clueless against amateur Indian spinner , has been a bunny of Harbhajan for a long long time . We cannot classify Ponting as a complete batsman leave alone being the best one for his inability to play well in spinnings track of India throughout his career . Thats the ultimate test for batsmen from England , Australia , SA to play in spinning conditions of India which Ponting failed miserably . His personal form was also going great as far as he has other greats in his team to support him but once they were gone he failed to score runs for himself leave alone winning matches for the team . It again shows that performing in a strong team of superstars was much easier compared , one advantage likes of Lara and SRT never enjoyed in there careers yet performed on many occasions fighting solo battles . One someone who said Ponting has 3 world cups and Tendulkar has none needs to realize that cricket is a team game , whatever Ponting achieved is nothing special . Give that same team to even Mohammed Yousuf and even he would have won those tournaments .

Imo, that takes a lot of credit away from Ponting. I say it is Sachin in one league then the likes of Ponting and Lara in the same lower league . When you compare both records, seems similar, both good at home, not so good in India. However, Ponting is a better captain and more responsible rather the the selfish Lara...

I had similar thoughts prior to exclusion of Various Greats from the Invincible Australian Team but once they were gone Ponting started looking like any ordinary cricketer whereas Lara inspite of playing for the weakest team managed to score runs at will against most opposition , Lara spanking Murali in Tests matches is another example . Its very clean that when you have other members in the team who are strong enough to handle some pressure its much easier to perform than in there absence . The Run Machine Ponting has lost the plot and sometimes looks like he has forgot how to score centuries something which he did at ease at one point in his career. His recent Odi century against India came after a very very long wait.

That is like saying even Baad Indian in an australian team would score tons of runs. Remember it is easy to **** up with pressure, this guy Ponting has handled that well enough as a captain. He was and still is the focus of Australian middle order.

You must be kidding to put Ponting ahead of both Lara and Sachin. You say Ponting's number have fallen away in last year. Go and check his stats from year 2007 and onwards. You'll get the clear picture. Ponting was a five year phenomena (2002-2006), go and check his numbers outside these, reality will dawn on you. And these 5 were the years where Australia was at it's absolute peak and Ponting made merry on the exploits on Warne and McGrath and on support of Hayden, Langer, Hussey, Waugh, Martin, Gilchrist etc.. Lara while I admit fails big time in terms of consistency but nothing has been more captivating sight in cricket in last two decades than watching him bat, when he is on song. For the sheer class and elegance , he would be in the elite league of batsmen of modern era, which consists only two memebers. Need I name them?

He's a Pak fan...I wouldn't expect anything else from him!
I know that. For years, they fought for the cause of Inzamam and lost it badly. Once again they trying to fight for the cause which has already been lost.

One thing I want to mention though. Lara did something no one does to Murali that consistently in his own backyard. That is to plunder runs by the tons in that 2001 series in SL. And he also has a double hundred in Pakistan. So he to me more than made up for his lack of scoring a century in India one of the sub-continental venues as been observed in the OP.
Yep, totally. And this is what made me wonder, is it easier for a batsman to play a spinner who spins away from you than into you? Lara owned Murali and Sachin owned Warne but the vice-versa was not true to that great an extent

Lara was far better batsman and also more pleasing to eye when in full flow. Most neutral fans rate Lara ahead of Tendulkar. Sachin failed most great fast bowlers of 90s.

Only a Paki rates Lara ahead of Sachin. Ask Richard Hadlee, Donald. :hysterical::hysterical:

Ask Richard Hadlee' date=' Donald. :hysterical::hysterical:[/quote'] If Lara was an Indian and Tendulkar played for the WI, he would rate Tendulkar higher than Lara. Funny comment on a Pak forum.... How can a player who never won a WC be the greatest batsman? Two posts later (same chap).... Lara is the greatest batsman and Kallis is the greatest currently playing. His average is higher than Tendulkar's. :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

Neutrals ? or you mean Pakistanis ? Its ironic to see that most Pakistanis support anyone who is up against in comparison with Sachin . In one of the other forums , there was a similar debate started between Ponting and Tendulkar where most of the Pakistanis were bragging about Ponting's greatness over Sachin by using there all time best lahori logic but the funniest part was that there were a couple of Aussies in there who themselves didnt think so and rated Sachin a good distance above Ponting but it was cute to watch out Pakis coming all guns blazing in support of Ponting like they always do for anyone up against SRT
