Dhondy Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Graphic's long post made fascinating reading. It also reminded me of similar lengthy posts I have made over the years in this very place, trying to change things, begging for rational debate, fairness, tolerance on part of the mods, forgiveness for repeat offenders, tolerance for opposing points of view. Exhorting people to branch out from cricket..Science Blog, Nerd Talk... And exactly what have I achieved? Nothing. Zilch. Nothing to show for. How many thousands of hours have I wasted here? Enough. Good luck to you all. Over and out from Dhondy.
Sooda Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 :(( There is a nerd talk! And reasonably active poltics forum!! Kinda branching out :dontknow:
achilles Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 1. Away average of 48.44 does not match up to the standards set by his modern peers like Tendulkar with 55.44 for way behind Dravid with 57.12. Clearly lacks the mettle to perform away from home to the extent of his peers and competitors. 2. Lopsided overall average due to playing an extremely high proportion of matches at home. Ponting has played 55% of his tests at home, for comparison Tendulkar has played only 45% at home. If Ponting had to play as many away tests as Tendulkar, his overall average would have been 53.xx 3. Performance in the backyard of his team's biggest opponents is laughable with an average of 20. This alone should disqualify Ponting from any race or talk about the best of his generation. 4. Another mediocre performance in the backyard of their traditional opponents England with an average of 44. These two points clearly show how he bottles up under the pressure of high intensity contests. Compare with someone like Waugh who would take the battle to both England and the toughest opponents of his time, West Indies averaging 74 and 68 respectively. 5. In a head to head with Tendulkar, for example, he comes up a cropper. Tendulkar averages 60.8 against 47.0 for Ponting when they played on the same pitches. And needless to say who faced the better bowling attacks. Tendulkar has outperformed Ponting in 6 out of the 7 series in which they have faced off. 6. Average is bloated by being in a very strong side with exceptional batting and bowling. Before Australia became the all conquering side his average was 43 till as late as the Ashes '01. After the retirement of Warne, McGrath, Hayden, Gilchrist he is back to the same mediocre average, again averaging 43. 7. His surge in average for a 5 year period was not only a result of being in a strong side, but the universally acknowledged flattening of pitches. In the 90s with great bowlers and juicy tracks still around his average was 44, that's in the league of what Samaraweera carries today and a good 14 points less than Tendulkar during those tougher batting times. 8. That Ponting is big 4th innings performer is a myth built on soft chases on docile tracks, which cannot be described as typical 4th innings wickets. Once you factor in 4th innings in places like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and West Indies where 4th innings tracks show wear and tear the average plummets to 13.2. 9. His second innings average is pretty ordinary compared to someone like Tendulkar or Dravid at 44.37. In the third innings of a test, he comes up a cropper with 40.50 with just 2 centuries. Has only 6 second innings hundreds in his entire career. 10. Has the distinction of being the only captain in cricket history to have thrown away a test by bowling part timers, so he would not be banned for future matches. And the show is not over yet. The wheels are coming off his batting after the safety net of a great team is gone. If he carries on till 2013 Ashes, it will take a brave man to consider nominating him as the best of his generation. I would like to see this post on Faux Australia's website or any Australian forum and see how they respond to this. Coz this is the most comprehensive exposé of Ricky Ponting in the HISTORY OF THE INTERNET :hatsoff:. Also, if Dean Jones is reading ICF, I issue him an OPEN CHALLENGE to prove my assertion of Ponting being a nit-wit, pretentious, over-exaggerated pr*ck as wrong :finger:.
achilles Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Hmm Tendulkar is the best batsman of this generation' date=' I don't think there is much doubt about that. However, Ponting is not THAT far behind.. It is always easy to make a batsman look worse than others when you include only the negative information. Interesting read though.[/quote'] This thread must be quite a tough read for you. But the thing is Ricky Ponting is a source of National Integration for us. All of us, be it anywhere from Siachen to Kanyakumari, hate his attitude to the core :two_thumbs_up:
CSK Fan Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I mean, can you believe it, that guy from Madras actually posted all the temparatures from different parts of the city as an argument in support of the randomness of SRT's adverse stats. He expects me to take him seriously. ? If this is pointed at me, I am not from Madras. The reason you had no reply to my post was because you did see the fallacy of the logic you were using to put Sachin down. Yep i dont expect you to take any post seriously which you have no reply to. Must be an easy life You can pull stats out of context and claim that it means whatever you want it to mean and then dont expect it to be rebutted?

He's quick to take cheap shots but even quicker to disappear when he's being attacked.
The Outsider Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Looks like people are having fun in the Lara thread - there is one for Ponting as well. :D
Raghav_12 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 oh.. looks like I made some posts at wrong place.. Thanks Prof anyways..

I am sure you check ICF from time to time, although not sure if you are checking this particular thread(I hope you do), and if you do please spend some time reading your posts from earlier days, or the threads that you may have initiated/penned down. You would be fascinated at how life would have changed for you, how you may have evolved, how cricket may have become another thing in life and not the only one etc etc. Go through your posts and I think you would learn a lot about you(nger) Dhondy :winky: It was never a waste mate. xxx
21cent Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 One thing Poting has over SRT is that he can actualy win mathces of importance. Ie= the 2003 final. Statistics dont matter when compared to WC glory or revolutionizing cricket. Tendulakar may have the greatest stats in the world, but he will never have gotten a single WC after playing in 4 Wc.

Going by your logic Warne >>>Murali because Murali has never won a test match in IND, OZ and SA. :hysterical::hysterical:

Anyway Sachin will win WC tomorrow.
asterix Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Please don't spoil every topic by childish trolling.

Statistics dont matter when compared to WC glory or revolutionizing cricket. Tendulakar may have the greatest stats in the world, but he will never have gotten a single WC after playing in 4 Wc. So how exactly did Ponting fare when he didnt have his great team mates like Mcgrath to bowl out oppoisiotn after he scored a 100 and his team still lost? How did he fare against other teams when he didnt have Gilchrist and Hayden to give him a great start like the 2003 WC? If he was as great as you say in important matches wouldnt he have single-handedly won this world cup too? After all the quaterfinal, was a match of importance too,w asnt it Only a simple fool can credit a team achievement(winning a world-cup) to one single player. Ponting fared in 4 world cup finals and failed in 3. You give one player 4 chances in a final and you give another only one and you think its fair to compare? And wzs Ponting chasing a score of 360 like Sachin that you like a fool are comparing the two? Give Sachin four chances he will win at least 2 finals
Bradman99 Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Going by your logic Warne >>>Murali because Murali has never won a test match in IND' date=' OZ and SA. :hysterical::hysterical:[/quote'] I don't want to go off topic either, but seriously you don't feel Warne > Murali? I'd take Warne any day!
Bradman99 Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Just to get it back on topic.. I think you present a very good case although I think everyone can now accept Tendulkar has been the best as oppose to when you made this thread when maybe there were people who thought Ponting or Lara was. However, the thing about these types ofd threads are they just pick out the bad.. If someone were to pick out just the bad in Tendulkar, maybe it would make people think he wasn't as good as he is either. Having said that, fantastic read.
The Outsider Posted April 2, 2011 Author Posted April 2, 2011 ^ This thread is in a sarcastic vein to show that holes can be picked in anyone's achievements. Holes which are factual but ignore a lot of complexities.
