As for British, they were the first to codify certain inalienable rights to human beings in the form of Magna Carta. They have Statutes spelling out the division of power within the government and the administrative set up. Besides, they've the unparalleled common law to fill in any gaps and commands precedential authority in Courts around the world, including India. I didn't say a bit of it is borrowed, I meant as in the bit about it in your post:)

Should people not learn to respect other view points? Even if is these view points are against what they believe in?

That gives the heebe-da-jeebies to people. Unless people find their identity within themselves rather than from external things, this shyt will go on and on. This is not just religious identity. Political, sexual, racial and lot more tamasha is there, saar.

Political, sexual, racial and lot more tamasha is there, saar. Well, religion can also be viewed as a human evolutionary outcome. Humans benefit and prosper from societies and by learning from others. Having a stable society is necessary for human progress and to make their lives easier. To counter the disruption of a society humans first formulated rules and laws of a society, primitive versions of it can even be seen in chimpanzees. But they also needed a more effective deterrent than human laws, for they are possible to circumvent by someone intent on breaking up a social structure. So the concept of divine justice, heaven and hell, actions always being watched by a higher being etc. which form the basis of any religion. Where religion separates from other social laws and structure is in their rigidity to evolve over time. So even if they do fill the immediate purpose of creating order in the society, the very strength behind their success becomes their weakness as other social structures evolve to the next level.
