THX_1138 Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I am watching, and absolutely loving the reimagination (i guess thats the flavor of the month with BSG, Star Trek, Batman, quite possibly Stargate) of the century old superhero series: The Phantom. This character is quite close to my heart, as my father used to have a collection of the Phantom comics when they were published by Diamond Comics in india during the early 80s. In fact, i often imagined my father, who then worked for India's only semiconductor industry in some suburb of Chandigarh, he would be gone for a whole week, only to return on the weekend, as actually the Phantom and the whole chandigarh trip every monday was his cover. Of course, being the diminutive bumbling fool i was, i was of course, his sidekick (in the series played by a trusty pygmy who was by his side at all times, and on occasion was at hand to **** any binds that the phantom might find himself in. so you can imagine my mental maelstrom when i finally saw his company: impressed by the technology, but sad that my father was not the phantom, but just an engineer (though he was a specialist at problem debugging, so one might call him the phantom of engineers). Anyways, the new series is darker, well the phantom was always dark: family killed, against people who were the personification of the western colonists etc etc. Moreover, the new series features the actual "Singh Brotherhood" yes, singh as in dudes with funky hair and bad attitudes, will frack you up if you touch their beard, singhs. furthermore, the arch nemesis is indeed played by a South Asian fella, with an indian accent (with a touch of british suggesting higher education). he is playing a darker, meaner and much more physical lex luther. This is such a significant step since the 1990s motion picture with billy zane labeled the Singh Brotherhood as the "sengh brotherhood" and they were all a bunch of muzzle fodder caucasians. Well anyways, i would like to invite all of your to watch this series on ScyFy and please, if you have a moment, write to USA networks to suggest that they pick up the Phantom for a whole series.

THX_1138 Posted June 25, 2010 Author Posted June 25, 2010 yep thats him... supposedly, the Phantom and Garth were two particular comic characters that enjoyed incredible success in india! the Phantom even exceeded the success garnered by the likes of superman and spider man.
bharathh Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 IMO the Phantom, and Mandrake comics had much better stories than Superman and Spiderman ever did. Since the Phantom and Mandrake were both humans, I found them easier to relate to. Also I personally found the style of illustration used in the the Phantom and Mandrake comics more pleasing to the eye. Not really a fan of the DC/Marvel comic books. The cartoons of course were a different story. I love most of the Marvel/DC cartoons. Esp Batman and XMen

In fact, according to rumour, the whole batman plot was Lee Falk's idea, which he shared with the young Bob Kane. Bob went ahead and created his own character and copyrighted it before Lee got wiser. Lee then revised his settings and moved his hero to a forest instead of a bat cave

Lee then revised his settings and moved his hero to a forest instead of a bat cave[/quote'] the phantom was the inspiration for superheros with nothing supernatural about them. phantom was a man of his own wits, agility and strength... aided by technology and the guns that he did use were only used to disarm the stooges. he never shot anyone with the intent to injure or kill. furthermore, the whole bit about the phantom guarding his identity led to the who idea of superheroes amongst us common folks who cant doge bullets or ride horses and shoot shyte down.
