Statistics, experts make a case for Kartik return Murali Kartik extended his contract with Somerset for another year just within two months of commencing his stint with the English county side. There was more than just a tinge of irony that the pair of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha ended up picking up one wicket in total, while conceding well over 200 runs against the Lankan batsmen at Colombo on the same day. An array of former cricketers in England, including the likes of Nasser Hussain, Michael Atherton and Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick, have repeatedly expressed their bemusement at why the 33-year-old spinner has been busy churning out match-winning performances for county after county rather than representing India. But that sentiment hasn't been shared by the national selectors. That though has been the enigmatic nature of Kartik's international career, which began so promisingly against the South Africans in Mumbai more than a decade ago. The last of his eight Test matches came against the same opposition at Kanpur in 2004, interestingly, less than a month after his match winning role against Australia in Mumbai. Recalled to the side mid-way through a ODI series against Australia�which he was commenting on from the studio�in 2007, he returned figures of 6-27, the best to date by any left-arm spinner in ODI cricket, only to be sidelined just a series later. He hasn't played for the country ever since. After having spent the early half of his career as a replacement for either Anil Kumble or Harbhajan Singh, Kartik was expected to become a permanent fixture in the side, once the former decided to call it quits. But two years since Kumble's retirement, the Railways skipper's performances have continued to be waived off, while a number of other spinners have been preferred. But the likes of Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Ramesh Powar and Piyush Chawla are yet to establish their niche in international cricket. On the other hand, Kartik's stock has continued to rise in county cricket, where he has churned out performances for a number of counties. Former national selector Venkatapathy Raju insists that Kartik should certainly be recalled. "Kartik is the only Indian spinner playing four-day cricket consistently throughout the year, and delivering the goods. He should be looked at for Tests." In less than two months, Kartik will turn 34, but far from slowing down, the combative left-arm tweaker has been playing non-stop cricket. An inscrutable affair it might have been so far, but there might still be one final tweak left in the chapter of Murali Kartik.

Kartik has had a pretty flawless season with the ball, tbf. 41 wickets at 16.95, with strike rate of 43.8 and economy of 2.32 shows that he is taking wickets at a great rate whilst keeping things tight.
