IKnowU Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 I just wanted to know if it is possible to connect a external hardrive to my router/modem so that I can access the files on the hardrive through any computer on my home network? Gunner_Mania Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 You cant connect it to modem or router because it wont get any IP address..heck the external drive wont even have a ethernet card..how will you connect? Connect it to one of the computers and map it as a network drive from all other computers, but that would require the primary computer also to be booted up.

maggot_brain Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Some router nowadays implement the SMB/CIFS protocol and have a USB port. You should consider getting such a router as it's the easiest solution to your problem.

dial_100 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 YOu get NAS, devise for around $100+ with hot swappable drive slots. I guess Netgear makes one. THere are few cheaper options as well. I have been thinking of upgrading my storage option to this one. Eventually, this will be common in the household as well. Only trouble is USB based connections wont go beyond 400 Mbps so could be bottleneck. Where as Ethernet based NAS will be quite fast.
