Blundering ways of Indian selectors

Hmm.. no reply from someone. Any, does anyone know for certain that Srikkant and co would be changed by any set of selectors in coming october? These are our first set of paid selectors. Any idea about their term coming to an end?
Chandan if I am not wrong the current selection panel is for 4 years. As for new players under Srikanth,DHoni's ODI batting has got better, Raina has found his mojo back under him, Nehra has made a good comeback to the ODI side, Gambhir became a far better test batsman (Vengy kept him waiitng and kept selecting Jaffer ahead of him), Mishra never got selected under Vengy, he got a chance under Cheeka, Sehwag too did better under Cheeka (Rememebr Vengy didnt want Sehwag for that Australian tour) and even Sachin has had 2 of his best years in international cricket since Cheeka took over!! Yes Srikanth has had issues in his selections like picking Balaji for the tour of NZ, sticking with Vijay in ODIs and Badri in tests(which IMO was well deserved) and playing musical chairs with the spinner's slot. But then so did Vengy, dropped Sehwag, kept selecting Jaffer, dropped Bhajji, kept selecting Powar, forced Dravid to resign from the captaincy after he had won the England series etc. As for developing a bench, both did nothing , in fact Vengy had said in 2007 "There are no good young players in the country to challenge the regulars" and had to eat his words when we won the t20 WC and CB series).

I'm talking about tests, sane and this thread is essentially about how we've gone and are going building our test side. I'm not that bothered about LOIs. And players doing well have nothing to do with selectors. Cheeka didn't do anything to Sachin that he started playing well. He recovered from the injuries and slowly gained his form back. And if the present set of selectors are for 4 years and India is gone. tThey'll be bowlerless after just a year.

:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: What a clown! So Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dhoni, and Raina scoring runs and centuries is thanks to Srikkanth? Oh, and Gambhir made his comeback under Vengsarkar. There was no need to select Mishra because Kumble was there when Vengsarkar was there. Vengsarkar was not perfect, far from it but at least don't make stupid statements like Tendulkar and Sehwag scoring runs is thanks to Cheeka!

Unfortunately that has been the case with all our selection committees. None of them had any vision. We were lucky to have got a bunch of very good young pacers between 2004-2007 (Irfan, RPS, PK, Sreesanth, Munaf, Ishant). Since then the focus of the BCCI (and perhaps young players as well) has shfted to money alone (IPL and other such leagues) and that has hurt our cricket. MRF pace academy is dysfunctional now (Irfan, RPS, PK, Sreesanth, Munaf all came through from that system), NCA' role is unclear (with the chairman Shastri having got no time for NCA and the chief coach Dav Whatmore preferring to join KKR) and the domestic tournaments and A tours have found no support from the administrators. The highlighted part says it all. Ours has always been a very adhoc system. Its purely down to the individual brilliance that we have been geting gifted cricketers.

Mr. Genius , maybe you would do well to go through the context of the post before indulging in name calling. Chandan said some players did well under Vengy, I said some of them have also done well under Cheeka. Now if that to you means they did well "thanks to Cheeka", thats your problem sir.

Have you heard of the concept of TRDO? Yes, they look out for talent round the country at a very young age and those impresss them are given oppotunities at their request by the state/club etc. Vengsarkar was the head of that organisation in the beginning of this millenium and hence had pretty good idea where the talent was coming from, in any department as he had kept tab of all those who he had tracked. Srikkant has no such experience and you see how the bowlers have disappeared and how they are putting their money on Jaskaran, Ganapathy, Dinda and Vinay Kumar by giving them exposure in India A squad as well Emerging players tournament. Sorry. Vengsarkar and More never showed that stupidity.

No, Chandan listed new and good players like Ishant, Gambhir, Sreesanth, Pathan, who were introduced to international cricket by previous selection committees - which incidentally is their job. You, on the other hand listed Tendulkar's centuries as accomplishments of Cheeka. :hysterical:

Look at post 100 and look for the post within quotes "Sehwag came back motivated, got a golden period from Ganguly for about 2 years and are still getting the advantage of Zaheer when he was brought back." Unless Sehwag, Ganguly and Zaheer also made their debut in 2004-2007, he wasn't only talking about new players, you see.

But you were talking only about older player even including Tendulkar!:hysterical: The reason she mentioned those names were because they were dropped and recalled to the Indian side - again a selection decision. WTF has Tendulkar, Dhoni, Sehwag, Raina who are already part of the team scoring well got to do with selection? I'll grant you Nehra, he made a comeback and has done decently well.

Sehwag came back motivated : he was struggling for form since a long time, and also suffering from poor fitness and hence was dropped after a string of poor scores . Then he was brought back after 6 months when he had worked on his fitness , lost about 10 kgs of weight, motivated him mind for international cricket during these 6 months. So the selector has be given credit here. Ganguly and Zaheer also made their debut in 2004-2007: Yes they did but Ganguly was dropped from the team in 2005 not only as a skipper but as a player too. More was the selectors them. But he kept working hard in domestic cricket. Any selector could have ignored a 34 years old oldie in 2006 december but Vengsarkar realised his hunger and motivation to prove himself as a batsman and brought him back. Same with Zaheer too. He was absent from the national team since a long time but was brought back at the right time. WHO HAS SRIKKANT BROUGHT BACK AT THE RIGHT TIME? WHICH TALENTED BOWLER HAS GOT BREAK DURING SRIKKANT"S TIME? And I'm a female. Thanks.

Chandan - this may not be about Vengsarkar or Srikkanth. But are you aware of the woeful number of TRDO's looking at the domestic scene? And are you aware of the various political ramifications that are involved before a youngster gets noticed by these gentlemen? India needs a better system. And soon.

Agreed! But it won't get and I'm sure of that.

Selection blunders? It is the system that is to be blamed More... It is the system that is to be blamed Makarand Waingankar The history of Indian cricket is replete with stories of controversial selections. With instances like a spinner replacing a fast bowler or a batsman replacing a spinner on a tour. And the selection at the National and State levels is only getting murkier because of big money. Too many matches It's not the selectors' fault. It's the cockeyed system. There are far too many matches at the junior and senior levels (405 for senior and 322 for juniors, total of 727 matches), for a committee of 10 members to select various national teams. Can one selector watch 72 matches in four months? It's impossible. When the system of Talent Resource Development Wing (TRDW) was introduced in 2002, talent emerged from the small towns as the TRDOs went about assessing the talent. Performances complemented the degree of talent the players had. Dhoni, Raina, Chawla, Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel, R.P. Singh and many others were spotted by the TRDOs, groomed systematically at the NCA and then given adequate exposure for them to blossom. The system was dispensed with a couple of years ago and suddenly Indian cricket has no new talent. Like the pre-TRDW days the present selectors have no option but to go back to the same players. Getting back to Munaf Patel is an ideal example of selectors not finding suitable replacement. Then there is an issue of workload of players. Selectors can't rotate players because, simply put, we don't have enough quality players of international standard. Revive TRDO The TRDO system needs to be revived with four TRDOs per zone watching the under-17 and 19 matches. Talent is bound to emerge but the system of selections has to be handled by experts. For far too many years the selectors have been chosen by the representatives of associations at the AGM. Not that the selectors' choices have been erroneous always. But if BCCI forms a National Selection Board comprising top five former players, and entrusts the responsibility to not only pick the State selection committees but also pick the zonal selection committees, we will hear fewer cases of nepotism. The root of the problem is that State selectors are chosen by the ruling group which prefers yes-men. Since most of the associations pay them well, very rarely do selectors fight for principles. The proposed National Selection Board could build a three-tier system of State, zonal and national committees thereby getting rid of ‘flunkey selectors' phenomenon. The very reason for bifurcating the State teams was to have 15 elite teams in one group so that they play quality cricket which will help selectors pick the right type of players. But because of some politically motivated selections, the zonal teams in the Duleep Trophy are based on the quota system. Two national selectors, in Bengal (Raja Venkat) and Maharashtra (Surendra Bhave), are not even in the State selection committees. Not being part of the State selection committees, they are not in the zonal selection committees. So they have no control over the selections in their respective zones. In one case a player picked by his selector for the Challenger Trophy was not in the 30 probables of his State team! The player has been without a State for two years! To remain at the top of the ICC Test ranking is every Indian cricket lover's dream but that can't be fulfilled if we persist with the flawed system that will foster more nepotism.

First test : Badri scores 56 and 6 Second Test: Badri scores 1. Which Indian batsman looks in shambles either against extreme pace or quality spin? I don't think anyone apart from Yuvraj does and hence he is yet to cement his place in Indian XI. Any other international batsman who looks in shambles against pace? Any Australian, South African, or even English? Please enlighten me. And other batsmen were also playing with Badrinath. They went on to hit tons despite having less experience? They were not in shambles against those quality bowlers! Anyway, don't think Badri's fate would be reversed even if we keep discussing about his shorcomings or plus points till the cows come home. This is the scorecard of Irani tie: http://www.cricinfo.com/indiandomestic2008/engine/match/368335.html And this is BP XI vs Aus XI So this is not just one test assessment but a number of FC matches and other international matches. If that doesn't make sense to you then I can't help you much. You are wrong once again Vortex. Sachin had a solid FC season in which he scored tons in all his Ranji, Duleep and Irani debut matches. After that only was he chosen. You are saying that Unadkat can go on A tours as if we have A tours every three months! This was a tour after a long long period and Unadkat excelled on a green track against WI A whose batsmen are not used to playing on such track. I'll like to wait here. So will Karkik ever get selected then? Why did he criticise the board in the first place? Because selection is done on zonal quotas and Railway (Kartik's team) sadly doesn't come under any such quota. What is the point of keeping a player in the list who'll never be selected?
And another thread discussing Badrinath here. If you want, you can read this thread too.

I dont know why they are sticking around with that Saha guy. He doesnt look a good enough batsman to me, certainly not international class. Maybe another case of good old quota selection ? Rayudu could have been selected in his place.

Vinay kumar is not an international standard bowler.. why is he in the squad :hmmmm2:
Yes, he is not international class. No point is investing more time on him. Vaday or Aaron or some other newbie would have been better choice. Saha is another baffling selection. This guy seems to having all the luck in the world. Played a test match as pure batsman in arguably India's best ever test batting line up.

he probably has a relative high up in BCCI

Sometimes I wonder Sometimes, I wonder if we are the world champions because of our selection policies or despite them. We are short an opener. You pick Parthiv Patel as a reserve keeper and possible opener. Fair enough. So, who is your alternative opener in case PP does not click? Khoop Style Rohit? Ridiculous, especially considering Ajinkya Rahane is a top-order bat. Sharma's List A 119 112 17 3106 142* 32.69 3819 81.33 Rahane's List A 48 48 1 1815 187 38.61 2165 83.83 I concede that 61 out of 119 of Sharma's List A outings are ODIs, and that may have skewed his avg/SR some, but on the flipside, the guy has been given 61 ODI outings and has time and again come up short. Plus, he is not an opener, we need one and Rahane could be one.

Strange selection, Saha and Rohit doesnt deserve to be there. Parthiv will prove this time I think. Rahane and Tiwary should get a Look in. Why did they ignore Pujara? And WTF, that Vinay Kumar is doing ? Oh wait, we do not have anyone better than him. :((
