i only watched the first session, but mithun looked very impressive. usually bang on target, drawing the batsman forward and beating him, using the short ball at the right time. had enough pace to beat the bat. in better conditions, he would have been a handful. hopefully he will snare a few wickets in the first session of play today.

For all the effort he puts as he releases it, the speed gun shows 128kmph! A trundler he is going to be. Dissapointed. We are a nation of trundlers.

Tell me that the day we have one bowler with express pace. There is no obsession, just a meagre desire for one. Its not like we're lining up our bowling lineup with thunderbolt hurtlers. :two_thumbs_up:

So that he plays just 30-40 matches in a 15 year career and often leaves the team in a lurch amidst a match? Sorry, I'll be quite happy with trundlers with good control, swing, variations and fitness so that they can at least play test matches unlike those high profile express ones who just can't last even one test.

There are enough pace bowlers at around the 145 kmph mark in most teams in the world save a couple. Most of them are regulars in their teams.

We may not have express fast bowlers, but whatever we have have seen us to the top of the test rankings. Our bowlers have been winning us matches where as some other teams with express fast bowlers are struggling to even win a single test. Results matter more than the thrill of speed, does it not?

And your choice of express bowlers is funny. 145kmph bowlers are express in your opinion? What special do they do which our trundlers don't? A bowler bowling at 120ks won us a match at Perth, Jo'berg, 2-3 bowlers bowling in 130s won us a series in England, NZ, WI and they continuosly win us series on the flat beds(according to you) in India. So what is wrong? Why should we crave for a mythical express bowler?

The credit should belong to our batsmen. Our bowlers have gotten away with substandard performances because the results have masked away our bowling ineffeciencies. For that to happen we needed a team combination that we were fortunate in having, a great batting lineup, some decent spinners, Zaheer + 1. That may change with some upcoming retirements. Further more we play mostly in subcontinental pitches where medium pacers are generally cannon fodder. Having one or two bowlers who can beat batsmen with pace (and seam may I add) and pick up early wickets will be helpful imo. Also there the very pertinent question as to whether we as a nation are not capable of producing fast bowlers. Evidence suggests we're not. I'd like that evidence to change. Its a simple matter of preference actually, not a life and death matter.

Express may be a wrong term I used, when we seem incapable of producing bowlers who can be classified fast or even fast medium. And you seem to forget our batting lineup when recalling our test wins. Like I said before, wait till some upcoming retirements happen, and then we'll see how your bowling metronomes cope.

Ok. So who is stopping you to wait till then? Spare us this express bowler nonsense till then. Anyway, on to the topic, does anyone else think that Mithun stops slightly just before taking the final stride to deliver the ball, hence losing all the momemtum he has gained in the run up?

I think you are hurting your own feelings more than anybody else's as you are unable to enjoy India's good performance in tests only because we don't have some mythical good for nothing express bowlers.

Look buddy, your beating around more aimlessly now than you were earlier. I clarified about express bowler. I am talking about fast bowlers, and no, just because they are not found in India does not mean they are mythical creatures. And I have rather enjoyed India's performances in the last few years, but that doesn't stop me from being dissappointed from certain aspects of our game.

Bihutoli...I agree. It will indeed be interesting to see when our batting maestros retire. Let's hope for the best... fingerscrossed.jpg

I think people have resigned to the fact that finding an express bowler in India is a miracle task...so we are content with these trundlers..... express or not, we need bowlers who bowl consistently in line and length and is always giving the team wicket taking opportunities ..... Irfan pathan initially showed those features

I have heard this argument used before, but the truth is, Overseas in helpful conditions, in the last 10 years our bowlers have outbowled Pakistani bowlers in the last 10 years. And no, it had nothing to do with our batsemen piling on runs as it was the same when the opposiiton batted first. Here are the stats of Pak vs Indian bowlers in the last 10 years in matches played away from home from cricinfo. Australia - Pak bowlers average 52 and Indians average 47 per wicket. NZ - Pak bowlers - 34 and Indians 30 per wicket Eng - Pak bowlers 40 and Indians 40 per wicket South Africa - Pak bowlers 38 and Indians 35 per wicket WI - Pak bowlers 31 and Indians 35 per wicket.

Yes, agree completely to both your points

Couldn't find any long highlights of Mithun bowling, but it is hardly a surprise that he did solidly and looked like taking wickets - it is what happens when you pick a bowler who is consistently taking FC wickets. Cricinfo commentary had him creating numerous chances and this is promising for a new bowler. People look with anticipation at the speed gun, but if he has the pace to bounce out Dilshan, he is quick enough for India.
