2005: Led Australia to England for the Ashes, led Australia to their first Ashes defeat in 18 years 2009: Led Australia to England for the Ashes, led Australia to another Ashes defeat 2010: Led Australia to England to play an opponent they had beaten in every test match since 1995... and promptly failed to win the series, managing to end said winning streak and drawing the series. Three tours to Ingerland, zero test series wins. :punter: phail

:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: and will remain like this as i dont think he will be back in england for any series

This is an amazing achievement, really. I would love to peek into his brain and see how it functions. What kind of thought process leads him to chose to bat first in overcast conditions? His opponents had only one strength and he allowed them to use that to the maximum. :fail:

All the tours to Ingerland have been marked by some of the most bass ackwards captaincy decisions I have watched. 2005: Bowling first on a road at Edgbaston when his star fast bowler was injured and the attack was revolving around Warne. 2009: Going into the Oval test with four seamers and Marcus North on a spinning wicket! 2010: Batting first at Leeds under overcast conditions. Now... Can the BCCI get us to play a test series in Ingerland v. Australia before Ponting retires? :woot:

He also has never won a test series (or match) in India as captain, thanks to calling a heavy roller on a spinning pitch and then leading a collapse to 93 all out.

^Maybe but I seriously doubt anyone can even equal his records as captain. Both winning matches and his own personal stats. He`s a highly intelligent captain. Really I can`t take anything away from that great man

Pak Fan's comment that he is a highly intelligent captain leaves me incredulous. I mean, really - the man's captaincy for several years was never tested because he inherited one of the all time great teams, and his toughest decisions were "Do I give the ball to McGrath, Kasper, Gillespie or Warne?" The man's leadership was never tested for a while given the quality of players he had around him for several years - once the big names started to fade and/or retire, then Ponting got blatantly exposed with stupid mistakes, a lack of intelligent tactics (how many runs were conceded yesterday/today through third man?) and plans, and a very ad-hoc approach to leadership. He was better versed in umpiring and getting up the opponents' noses than he was in working out an opposition batsman's dismissal (something he left to his bowlers). For a quality captain, look up Mark Taylor who had a fraction of the resources Pwnting had when he began, never finished with the same W-L record but is held in FAR higher regard as a strategist and leader. Meanwhile, I pray Ponting retains the captaincy for the India tour.

You do know games are won by teams, not just captains and seeing how pathetic his captaincy is without his star players, I can safely assume someone in the team had previously saved his ass some embarrassment

Similar circumstances - chose to bat on a greentop with heavy cloud cover. Aus got rolled by Zoysa and Vaas (and Murali mopped up what was left). Kasprowicz and Warne limited the damage in SL's first innings, Gilchrist and Martyn played a couple of masterpieces to build a lead and then Warne won the match in the 4th. Moronic decision saved by a genius and three other excellent/outstanding players. Here, he didn't have those luxuries around him and hence the result was different.

Of all the sports, cricket captains have perhaps the most important role in a teams success. Teams alone can never win a match by themselves. Agreed? India always had superstars but Ganguly turned their fortunes around. Or am I wrong ? Ponting is an amazing technician and the most tactically conscious players around. His field placement plus applying pressure is second to none. His tactics alone brought Oz victory countless times. Sure players are important but the art of using them at the right moment is exclusive to a good captain only

Oh god *groan* I will concede hes one of the best batsman but please stop disproportionately hailing his captaincy skills. Have a read of what Salil said, digest it, and than re read it again. His decision to bat first lost us this match, so much for great tactical nuisance.

Coz I remember something similar happening then and Ponting asking Rahul to join him and register a protest against the curator.

That was ridiculous sportsmanship. Rather than politely accepting that HE made a mistake and that his team was OUTPLAYED by a stronger opposition, he had the nerve to threaten the curator with action and possibly arm-twisted the mild-mannered Rahul Dravid to join him in his "If I lost, it was the pitch's fault" campaign. And you remember Punter bowling spinners and non-bowlers in the Border-Gavaskar trophy in India in '08, so that he doesn't get banned for over-rate? This guy has been a ridiculous captain at times. And has a despicable attitude problem.
