Make referrals mandatory: Sangakkara Amol Karhadkar, Hindustan Times Colombo, July 13, 2010 Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara felt it was time the ICC made the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) mandatory for all Test matches. Bowing to India’s resistance to using the UDRS, Sri Lanka Cricket decided not to use technological aid for indecisive umpiring decisions despite the ICC recently authorising the home boards to decide on UDRS’ use in consultation with the visiting board. Interestingly, India have never featured in a Test series involving UDRS ever since it affected them a great deal during their series in Sri Lanka two years ago. “As players we are very much in support of the Decision Review System (DRS). I was under the impression that the ICC has set the standards on this by saying that everyone should use the DRS system. I think last year in India also, the entire team felt a little hard done by when we came to know that we couldn’t have the DRS system,” Sangakkara said. “The role that ICC has to play here is to make sure that all boards are bound to have the DRS system rather than when one side refuses, the other side can’t enforce the DRS system under current playing conditions.” India skipper M.S. Dhoni, however, justified his team’s stand due to lack of a foolproof system. “DRS is still not 100 per cent correct. We have seen that inspite of having the DRS, not everything goes correct. Most of the teams have played a series under the DRS, so it is important now to come up with a foolproof plan and see what exactly works,” Dhoni said. “In a bat-pad scenario, hot spot really works. Even on lbw decisions, we need to have something like that. If everything follows in that way, we can just have a camera instead of an umpire.”
thevortex Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Make UDRS mandatory by all means. Not Hawkeye. Question Hawkeye. Include Hot spot by all means.

More... Thursday 29th July 2010 "UDRS should be used in each Test" Retired South African umpire Rudi Koertzen feels the controversial decision review system should be made compulsory in Tests as otherwise it puts undue pressure on the man in white coats. The Umpires Decision reviews System was not used in the recent Pakistan-Australia Test series, where Koertzen retired and even in the current Sri Lanka-India Test series, it has been kept out. "You should have it in every single series. Somehow, somebody has to come up with a deal and say we will support this, we will sponsor it. It's no use having it when South Africa play Australia or in the Ashes, and then you have for example Sri Lanka playing Bangladesh and you can't have it," Koertzen said. "I don't think that's fair on the umpires because in one Test you get some sort of assistance and in the other one you're on your own. It's only going to make it harder for the guys if it goes that route." Koertzen said umpiring in an international match is always difficult as while people around the globe watch slow-motion replays, they don't have any access to TV. "You make a decision and you watch the (corporate) suites - there are maybe a hundred suites. Everyone sitting there jumps up and goes to look at the monitor inside their suite to see if you've made the right decision or not. That is sad because it puts a hell of a lot of pressure on you. At the end of the day you're the only guy who knows if you did your best or not," Koertzen told Cricinfo. "With the technology, millions of people can see if you got it wrong. You stand there and think you made a good decision and then you hear a few boos from upstairs and you think, maybe I did get that wrong. You won't know until you walk off the field and you have a chat with the third umpire and the match referee," he added. The UDRS has been regularly criticised by many teams with several players even pointing out the technological glitches. It was at the centre of an embarrassing row in January during the Johannesburg Test between South Africa and England. But despite the controversies, the ICC has pressed for its use during the 2011 World Cup and also called all teams to use it regularly in Tests. Koertzen is Africa's Regional Umpire Performance Manager Retired South African umpire Rudi Koertzen has been appointed as the Regional Umpire Performance Manager (RUPM) for the Africa region by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The record-holding umpire, who tired after officiating at the final Test between Pakistan and Australia in Leeds, will now performance manage, support and coach the Elite Panel and International Panel umpires within his region as well as those umpires visiting his region to officiate. Koertzen will also work closely with the home board umpire managers of the Full Member boards of Cricket South Africa and Zimbabwe Cricket as well as the ICC Africa regional office to support the emerging umpires in Africa. "It is a great honour to be able to give back to international cricket and to be able to share my experience and knowledge with umpires at all levels within the Africa region," said Koertzen on his appointment. "I look forward to contributing to the improvement of officiating in the region and working alongside all those involved in this. I am delighted to be given this opportunity of continuing to be part of this wonderful game and the wonderful profession of umpiring," he added.
SachDan Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Tendulkar prefers Hot-Spot over UDRS The Umpire Decision Review System may have its share of supporters but Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday gave a thumbs down to UDRS, saying he was not fully convinced with the controversial referral system. Tendulkar said instead of UDRS, he was more in favour of the usage of new 'Hot-Spot' technology, which is an infra-red imaging system used in cricket to determine whether the ball has struck the batsman, bat or pad. "I am not fully convinced with the referral system (UDRS). When I was here last time I was not convinced with many decisions. I did not feel comfortable, it was an experiement which I felt," Tendulkar told reporters here after notching up his fifth double hundred in Tests. "I would rather go with the Hot Spot because that establishes the contact between the bat and the bowl. That it is far better system according to me. The Hot Spot is much better," he said. The UDRS has recently got some supporters in Australian captain Ricky Ponting, Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan and former ICC umpire Rudi Koertzen, who called for the use of the system in every Test match. asterix Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Whatever is good for cricket should be implemented whether players like it or not. One bad experience in an utterly whinging/crying condition (like playing in Srilanka) should'nt form the basis of denial of UDRS. Kumble was clueless in using the UDRS judiciously last time and it seems it has mentally scarred many senior players...
thevortex Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 A thread that the Hawkeye supporters must note and give due attention. By the way, I think the thread title may have to be modified to say that Tendulkar prefers Hot Spot over Hawkeye. Either way Hawkeye is NOT the UDRS. Many here mistakenly assume that to be the case. Hawkeye is just a tool. UDRS is the concept. And I am pro-UDRS. All the way.
Tendulkar_Bhai Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I wasnt in favour of anything, but we now must agree with his words that Hot Spot should be used, how can we speak against a cricket God, sat on our chairs at work having only played with tennis balls against the garden wall.
asterix Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 What is Hot-Spot? Is it not part of UDRS? Being a prime LBW candidate, I can understand why Boss likes Hot-Spot because Hot-Spot cannot effectively assist in most of the LBW decisions..
asterix Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 ^ prime LBW candidate?this aint Ponting talking Pssst... (It's a bait) :winky:
Serani Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Hot Spot is being used in UDRS in the eng-pak series. Just because Sky sports care about their viewers enough to have the technology rather than the third world tv production that is sub continent cricket.
cowboysfan Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 sachin knows we just cant pick and choose the technology he wants or likes in the udrs,a lame excuse if i ever saw one. Tendulkar_Bhai 1
