During the Test series, the fast bowlers didn’t come up with yorkers or sufficient slower ones nor they could find reverse swing with the kookaburra ball. Together the bowlers delivered too many no-balls. Going into the one-dayers, Simmons will have an even more arduous task. During the first Test, Gary Kirsten had admitted that finding the ideal fast bowling unit for the World Cup was proving to be a challenge. Sudeep Tyagi, Abhimanyu Mithun, Irfan Pathan, R Vinay Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Umesh Yadav, Abhishek Nayar, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth and RP Singh, to name a few, have been among the 16-odd medium-pacers or bowling all-rounders who have played ODIs since Kirsten took over in March 2008. So dire is the need to find medium-pacers who fit the bill in the 50-over game that the side is also using the Test matches ahead of the World Cup to hone in on the best possible unit. One bowler with a lot of promise is Ishant Sharma. However, an ankle injury has ruled out Ishant for the first one-day international of the tri-series against New Zealand on Tuesday. Ishant, Kirsten had said, was short on confidence going into the Test series. But after bowling in testing conditions against quality batsmen he would have gained self-belief. Abhimanyu Mithun made the Test squad in place of an injured Zaheer Khan. And when Sreesanth returned home even before the tour game with a dodgy knee, Mithun got his chance. Ishant’s injury presents an opportunity for India to give Mithun another run in one-dayers. Mithun made his Test debut at Galle and has played one ODI against South Africa in Ahmedabad. Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra are the other medium-pacers in the side. Mithun the all-rounder? Mithun made runs in the Test series with a highest of 46 at the P Sara Oval. Though it would be too early to judge him as his international career is still in its nascent stage, Mithun could turn out to be the medium-pace bowling all-rounder that India desperately needs. Both Praveen and Nehra are handy one-day bowlers and while the team played three medium-pacers during the Asia Cup held at the very same venue, it waits to be seen what kind of bowling combination they prefer in this tournament. The team management will have to strike a fine balance between giving medium-pacers, who have the potential to make the World Cup squad, a decent number of matches but at the same time they have to be quick in sorting the chaff from the wheat. The team cannot afford to put the need to experiment over the desire to constantly win. It could lead to the side losing momentum and in a World Cup year it wouldn’t be the wisest strategy. Kirsten and Dhoni have in the past expressed their disappointment at the various fast bowlers who have been given a chance to play in the ODIs but haven’t shown the potential or for that matter the hunger to play for the country for at least another five years. Injuries to key players always present an opportunity for a team to look at their bench strength. It is sometimes a blessing in disguise. Over the past two years Team India has tried and tested various medium-pacers in an effort to find those who can make the cut when the World Cup side is announced. India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand will use this tri-series as part of their World Cup preparations. For Dhoni and Kirsten, it presents another opportunity to test the mettle of the medium-pacers.

munna back in team again Munaf to join ODI squad in Sri Lanka Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel will join the one-day squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka as cover for Ishant Sharma, who suffered an ankle injury and missed the first game against New Zealand on Tuesday. Munaf was part of the Test squad, but wasn't named in the original touring party. He joined the team in Sri Lanka when Sreesanth had to pull out before the Test series due to a knee injury. The debutant Karnataka seamer Abhimanyu Mithun was preferred over Munaf, who sat out all three Tests. Mithun bowled only four overs in the opening one-dayer before suffering a heat stroke.

Id rather have Munaf and him try to regain some form and prove himself as we are DESPERATE for a fast bowler for the WC, whereas ppl like Jadega need to be given injuctions! All he has to do is bowl ok and be threatening and he will be in a team such are the standards, an attack of Zaheer, Munaf, Bhajji and Sreesanth/Ifran might get us through the world cup.

wndr if sending irfan wud hve been better though.... they hv been whining ofr the lack of all rounders... cud hv tried him out with the ball swining a bit in Dambulla...not coz he's better or smthin... both r pie chuckers only so wudn make a diff.... i srsly feel irfan has dne smthin terribly wrong thts y he hs been so out of contention........

Well, Irfan still has plenty of chances to impress before the World Cup. I'm not sure what Munaf has done recently to merit an inclusion in the ODI team.

Well' date=' Irfan still has plenty of chances to impress before the World Cup. Well, let's give the guy a chance. His wicket to wicket line is okay, as at least he doesn't give easy boundary balls but batsmen have to drive and play good shots.

Munaf is content to bowl 125kph every ball. We know from his early days that he has the capacity to bowl faster but he chooses not to. It's part of his ill conceived attempt to become the Indian McGrath. Clearly that hasn't worked out so maybe he should go back to bowling quick.

Sreesanth under cloud India paceman Sreesanth is racing to be fit for the first of two Tests against Australia beginning in Mohali on October 1. More... Sreesanth under cloud 20/08/2010 India paceman Sreesanth is racing to be fit for the first of two Tests against Australia beginning in Mohali on October 1. The 27-year-old was on the comeback trail from swine flu, and also stress fractures in his back, when he injured his knee while training on the tour of Sri Lanka. The injury has been diagnosed as a medial collateral ligament tear in his left knee, but Sreesanth hopes to be fully fit for the Test and ODI series in October. In the meantime, the fast bowler will try to get himself fit enough for an upcoming domestic tournament, the BCCI Corporate Trophy on September 1, in order to thrust his name in the selectors' eyes for a spot in India's XI to play Australia. Sreesanth began bowling in the nets on Friday in his bid to return to the national team. The right-armer has played 17 Tests for India for a return of 60 wickets, at an average of 32.01.

Sreesanth hoping for comeback in Corporate Trophy Sreesanth, who injured his knee in Sri Lanka, is hoping to come back to match fitness for the BCCI Corporate Trophy, which begins on September 1. More... Sreesanth hoping for comeback in Corporate Trophy Cricinfo staff August 20, 2010 Sreesanth, who injured his knee in Sri Lanka, is hoping to come back to match fitness for the BCCI Corporate Trophy, which begins on September 1. He has been going through physiotherapy and rehab at the NCA in Bangalore, and resumed bowling on August 20. Sreesanth was attempting a comeback after a bout of swine flu and then a stress fracture of the back had kept him out of the national side. Upon reaching Sri Lanka, he injured the knee while warming up for the first training session on the tour. It was diagnosed as a medial collateral ligament tear in his left knee. Sreesanth had returned to India, and then went to England to consult Jonathon Lavelle, an orthopaedic consultant in England, for further diagnosis. He is relieved that the knee doesn't need surgery and is hopeful of starting another comeback through the Corporate Trophy. The domestic tournament is the only event through which Sreesanth can stake a claim for selection for Australia Tests: the Irani Cup coincides with the first Test of the series.
