Pak wants Indian aid routed through UN Pakistan has refused to accept directly the Indian aid of five million dollars for its desperate flood victims and instead suggested that it be routed through the UN. Pakistan has conveyed this to India [ Images ] which is expected to agree to this procedure, sources said in New Delhi [ Images ] on Saturday. The sources made it clear that India has no problem in routing the relief material through the UN. "It is a humanitarian crisis (being faced by Pakistan) and India has offered the aid as a goodwill gesture. The modalities of providing the assistance do not matter," a source said. On when the relief material would be sent, the sources said such aspects would be worked out when an idea is received from Pakistan as to what material they want. "The broader objective is to provide humanitarian assistance in the hour of need to Pakistan," the source said. The floods have killed over 1,700 people and affected 20 million in Pakistan. Around 1.2 million homes have been destroyed or damaged. The floods started over a month ago following heavy rains in the country's northwest. India had made the offer of aid on August 14 when External Affairs Minister S M Krishna [ Images ] called up his counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Pakistan was reluctant to accept the aid. Three days later and after a nudge from the US, Qureshi said Pakistan was ready to accept the Indian assistance. The resources of the Pakistan government and aid agencies are already strained in their effort to provide relief. The UN, which is extending massive assistance, has said it is struggling to meet the needs of the affected people. "The floods are outrunning our relief efforts. We move faster and faster, but the finish line keeps moving further ahead," UN spokesman Maurizio Giuliano said a few days back. These guys are just awesome .. on one side they do not want any aid from next door India whatsoever. On the other side, despite America promising hundreds of millions of dollars, they spam (beg) the famous personalities of America for 'awareness'. The news covers it on a daily basis but the begging bowl does not seem to have a bottom. http://blog.dawn.com/2010/08/28/tweeting-for-pakistan/ I bet if India was anywhere near a developed nation, they would tweet SRK & co. for more awareness (read alms). BTW why isn't SRK doing anything for his brothers from across the border ?

India announces additional $20 mn aid to flood-hit Pak India on Tuesday announced additional $20 million assistance to Pakistan which is grappling with the worst floods in recent history of the region. The announcement by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in the Lok Sabha comes in the wake of Pakistan’s readiness to accept India’s initial aid offer of $ 5 million which is to be routed through the United Nations. “As a more concrete assessment of the damage inflicted by this natural disaster and the urgent needs of the people of Pakistan emerges, Government has decided to increase its assistance to Pakistan from $ 5 million, announced earlier, to $ 25 million,” he said in a suo motu statement. Of the total aid, $ 20 million would be contributed to the ‘Pakistan Initial Floods Emergency Response Plan’ launched by the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian efforts, he said. The balance $ 5 million would be contributed to the World Food Programme for its relief efforts in Pakistan, Mr. Krishna said. He noted that India had offered $ 5 million aid to Pakistan during his telephonic talks with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on August 13. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a conversation with Pakistan Premier Yusuf Raza Gilani on August 19, had conveyed that India was ready to do more to assist the neighbouring country which is facing the worst floods in the past 80 years. Pakistan was reluctant to accept the aid and agreed only after a nudge from the US. However, last week Pakistan conveyed to India to route the aid through the UN. “We cannot remain unconcerned with this grave humanitarian crisis of enormous magnitude in our immediate neighbourhood,” Mr. Krishna said. He noted that the recent floods have been described as the worst in that part of the region in the last 80 years. According to the latest UN figures, 17.2 million people have been affected by the floods which have left 1,600 people dead. More than 1.2 million houses have been damaged or destroyed besides widespread damage to infrastructure, Mr. Krishna said. “All the four provinces of Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir have suffered the consequences,” he said. http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article605539.ece

So we are now giving them $25 million dollars after they rejected earlier offers. We also will not give them directy but again will bow to their pressure of routing through UN so they do not have to say they accepted out charity. We are actually begging them to take out money on our hands and knees, while they play hard to get. Yet its is the paks who are dying. How bizzare
