Slamming the foreign media for "running a campaign'' against India over its handling of the Games, the minister said, "Dated and frozen images, exaggeration, trying to run down a country is not acceptable to us.'' A visibly angry Sharma said India is an emerging economic power as well as the largest democracy in the world and the Commonwealth.
Shades of Lahori Logic there.

Critiquing CWG may hit business ties: Anand Sharma tells nations Lashing out at nations, particularly Australia, New Zealand, Canada and England, for criticizing India for its handling of the Commonwealth Games, Commerce Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Friday warned that they may have a price to pay in terms of business opportunities in the emerging economy. "It would be a mistake not to engage with India with respect. When it comes to business, who's loss would it be?" he told the media after meeting his Canadian counterpart Peter Van Loan in Ottawa. He said, "I can tell you we will host the Games and we will host them in a manner which is befitting.'' The minister said "unprecedented rains and heavy floods even till now'' have played havoc with work at the Games' village. "There is no major project anywhere which is concluded to perfection.'' Hitting out at those international athletes who have pulled out of the Games citing health and security reasons, Sharma said, "Maybe either they are not confident of winning the medals or they will lose out.'' Earlier interacting with South Asian journalists in Toronto Thursday night, the minister said, "I would like to request the media members for a fair and balance reporting. One sink picture and one dirty room picture. But there are many positives - tens of thousands of people have toiled getting stadiums (ready), building metro....but nothing gets reported.'' He added, "Let me put it bluntly that tens of thousands of athletes will be coming and the Games will be successful.'' The minister said India carried out the preparations transparently and the country will live up to its " tradition and culture (that) how hospitable we are - a guest is a god for us.'' Sharma is in Canada to meet his Canadian counterpart Peter Van Loan, business leaders and CEOs as part of the dialogue between the two countries to deepen their "strategic partnership'' and triple bilateral trade to $15 billion in the next five years. :yay::yay::yay::two_thumbs_up:
Finally we've grown some guts. Cheers :two_thumbs_up: I wouldn't say that we've done a fantastic job, I'd say the foreign media is running a malicious campaign with their "protected" sources, with "undated" images and with an intention to harm India's image. Like Rahul Bajaj and Anand Sharma have rightly pointed out, no one wants to talk about the good parts of the CWG, no one wants to reveal when were the pics taken and no one wants to report the things that are in order. Everyone wants to dip their spoon in the pie and sell their paper. We've done a good job and if people do not want to come, their loss. We should've cleaned up in time, but that is no reason to cry hoarse on international radio shows and tv channels about India's organising abilities, only to eat their words 24 hrs later.

Damage is done. The countries have raised legitimate concerns --- btw, only 500 out of the 1300 odd towers are fully ready --- and being aggressive towards them will only alienate India further. These new "cleaner" pictures are misleading. Nobody complained about the Dining area, gym facilities etc. The complaint was about basic hygiene and sanitation facilities --- those still haven't been accounted for (Botswana team claim the conditions given to them are still 'unlivable')

Its not possible to please everyone. With a budget of Rs.70,000 crore, we do expect that the newspapers, radios, television and interwebs paint a good picture and mistakes have been made. There is no denying that. But to make these attacks and then 24 hrs later saying that they are happy with the situation is like prejudging a match between Federer and Nadal and then saying, "Oh, that kid played mighty well to win the game". Countries are being hyper-critical. Things aren't good but people are portraying them to be ridiculous, which is not the case. 500 out of 1300 odd towers are fully ready says some media. But I doubt if any country has gone ahead making flats worth 2 crores (govt. estimates, that too) for people to stay in. And the delegations are playing flip-flop on a daily basis. One day, conditions are unlivable. Next day, remarkable turnaround. If you read between the lines, it means that the situation was nothing but blatant exaggeration and had the situation been as bad as reported, rescuing ourselves from it in 24hrs is not a task we can easily fulfill. India only has itself to blame for the mess she finds itself in. That however doesn't mean that people can keep taking potshots at us.

LOL, sj is the MOST OPTIMISTIC supporter of the CWG  Unwavering confidence in Kalmadi and his band of thugs.
That's because he has a "plan" in place to take his GF for a day out in the Taalkatora stadium and watch women swimming. Then have good food at the Food court (if allowed for "voluenteers+1 guest")..

indias image(whatever it had in the international forum) has already been tarnished. The minister's warning/blackmail isnt going to help matters. The indian media has been over the top as always in their reporting. The only positive is atleast there are some decent stadiums, practice venues developed for atheletes to practice in futureand better infra for the city.

Racism at Games? Africans upset NEW DELHI: South Africa led the charge of the African nations against the shoddy Commonwealth Games preparations on Sunday. As the Delhi government carried out frantic clean-up operations in the Games Village, South Africa set the cat among the pigeons by saying a snake had been found in an athlete's room. South Africa's high commissioner to India Harris Majeke told reporters a snake had been found in the room of an athlete at the Games Village. "That was really a threat to the lives of our athletes," he said, complaining of filth in the living quarters including basements of the buildings. "When everything is done, then we will ask our teams to come," he added. The South African criticism is part of a larger grouse of the African nations against organisers of the Commonwealth Games. While the OC has been overly sensitive to the wishes of countries like the UK, Australia and Canada, the African countries found that they had been virtually ignored by the organisers. The first site visit for the African countries to Games venues was arranged only this week. For months, said sources, African countries have been asking for information from the government, but in vain. Last week was the first time they got any briefing from the ministry of external affairs. MEA has itself been kept out of the Games preparations, and was brought in virtually at the last minute when the damage control exercise had to be rolled out. Since they are the most familiar point of contact for the African nations, it was particularly frustrating that nobody was telling them anything, least of all the organisers. The first briefing was, sources said, little more than a bare bones briefing, because the MEA itself was not kept on board. In fact, privately, the word from many African countries is that India was practising the same kind of racism against the African countries that India itself has complained against. Out of the 53 nations in the Commonwealth, there are 19 from the African continent, all of whom are participating in the Games. This week, India will also play host to the president of Mozambique, a member of the Commonwealth, though it used to be a Portuguese colony and not a British one. On Saturday, a visibly upset high commissioner of Rwanda -- a former Belgian colony and one of the most recent additions to the Commonwealth -- was seen looking for the Indian quarters in the Games Village. "I want to see their quarters. The place they have given us for our accommodation is not clean and my athletes are arriving here tomorrow," was his explanation. However, India got a vote of confidence from South Africa's Olympic boss. In a statement, Gideon Sam said he would himself clean toilets to ensure the success of the Games. "Our athletes will have no excuses if they do not perform at the Games," Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), said ahead of the team's departure on Sunday. "If they are unhappy with their rooms because they have not been swept, they must take off their jackets and sweep them themselves. We will not complain. South Africans do not do that," Sam added. "And when I get there on Friday, if a toilet is not clean, I will clean it myself." It only adds to India's shame. :cleveland::sarcastic_hand::sarcastic_hand:

How so ? They are only asking for hygienic facilities and a safe environment to play in. After spending 70, 000 odd crores, is that too much a request ?
