Rain hampers practice, may affect warm-up match Indianexpress, Express News Service, 23 September 2010 With just three more days to go before the Australian team face the President Board XI's team in a warm-up match, Ricky Ponting and company were certainly looking forward to get back into the groove. However, rain gods had other plans as continuous rainfall forced them to practice indoors. The Australian team were supposed to practice at the Sector 16 stadium on Thursday morning but rainfall meant that they could not go out and train at the ground. This means that the warm-up match starting from September 24 may be affected due to continuous showers. In the last 24 overs, Chandigarh has recorded 122.8 mm of rain, thus making it one of its wettest monsoon ever. Widespread showers occurred in some parts of Chandigarh and the Tri-city in the evening and the Met Department has predicted more rains over the next two days. Heavy downpour not only left the outfield wet but also gave extra work to the groundsmen at the Sector 16 stadium. "We are keeping our fingers crossed. Even if we get a bright sunshine a day before the practise game, we can have a good match," Daljit Singh, PCA curator, said. "The drainage system at the Sector 16 stadium is very good and that should help," he added. Meanwhile, the Australian team led by skipper Ponting, did some running and stretching exercises before hitting the gymnasium.

Squad : Gautam Gambhir (capt)' date= Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla, Abhimanyu Mithun, Sreesanth, Jaidev Unadkat, Umesh Yadav, Abhinav Mukund, Ravindra Jadeja. I was hoping to see Rohit Sharma in the longer version and also Manish Pandey. It was a good opportunity to test him agaist international bowlers. And how long are we going to ignore players Rayudu and Nacheem? Why are we not bring them back into the main stream?
Players --- Replacements Kohli --- Sharma Mithun--- Dinda Aswin --- Ojha Mukund hasn't been replaced as he was sure not to find a place in playing XI. What do you say guys? An attack of Sree, Unadkat, Ojha and Chawla are enough to test the Aussies or should we have given a chance to Mishra? Playing XI might be like this: Gambhir Dhawan Rahane Pujara Sharma ? Saha Chawla Sree Ojha Unadkat Who'll be number 6? Jadeja?

:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Selectors truly are a bunch of jokers. They ofcourse didn't consider the Indian players' potential of making it to the Semis & eventually the finals of the CLT20.

^ Pick Mishy over Chawla. That should give him the requisite practice to play them in the Tests. My Playing XI: Gambhir Dhawan Pujara Rahane Sharma Saha Mukund/Dinda Mishra Sree Ojha Unadkat The No.6 spot might goto Jaddu, but if we play 2 frontline Spinners, I believe Mukund or Dinda should be given an opportunity.

Shouldn't Mithun be left alone by CSK' date=' he has no chance of playing, so let him go and play against Aussies.[/quote'] Yeh, Mithun certainly has no chance of playing for CSK. BTW, I'm unsure what the point of such a large squad was, if they will fly in replacements when people are unavailable. Surely this was a chance for some of the more fringe players in the squad to get a chance.

Should Prag be playing for the BP side, he will play for India if we go in with two spinners right? Why give the Aussies a look at him in a tour match...Plus as msb says this should have been an op for the fringe players, someone like Abdullah. Its should really be Kartik, but thats not going to happen. Also why not Praveen Kumar. Is he there in the BP or Irani trophy ROI squad ...? Surely he is a better bet for test cricket than Dinda...

^ I know. Wish the board had the clout/balls to just say NO, this is more imp. Not like Mithun is gonna play for CSK really... Is that in the BP XI he would not find a spot? he has been faring better than Dhawan in the A tours...

Yay so now T20's more important than having the opportunity to prove yourself for the Test side
It isn't NOW that T20 are more important than this practice match. It was more important when the squad announced itself!

Ojha is playing and if we go by your logic then even Sree, Gambhir, Pujara etc shouldn't play too, isn't it? How can you choose Praveen Kumar when he is spearheading RCB's attack with Steyn? Do you have a good seamer's name who has done well in FC cricket and is not in RCB and CSK squad right now? Which third opener can you find to replace Mukund? Do you have a choice? You guys seem confused to me.

You are funny. "pick Mishra" as if the squad will be named tomorrow. The squad is in front of you and have choose the playing FROM THAT SQUAD. I hope you understand that.

Not really, because both Sree and GG are just back from injury/ havent played much test cricket lately so need the practice. Pujara wont play unless someone is injured. OTOH if we play two spinners Ojha will defnitely play...

Yeah, good pt re Kumar, but then I dont really follow T20 cricket very closely at all so I didnt really know that. And thereby Im kinda wondring where Mukind is...in the Champ League for CSK I am assuming? Kumar can still play for ROI in the Irani trophy right...he should And..err.. if you dont mind me asking why are you always kinda...stern... in your posts ..ma'am :fear:

I didn't notice him playing in any of Buchi Babu or Moin Ud Daula kind of invitational tournaments. So it is indeed quite important for him to regain his rhythm.

Even I don't follow any of these T20 tournaments but I do surf through the news a lot everyday and that is how I come to know what is happening. Apart from that I check the scorecard of cricinfo/cricbuzz of the matches I don't watch live. It hardly takes 2 minutes to know what would have happened. And err.. I was kind of bemused by those posts ..so sorry if they came out as something rude!!!

Actually Chandan - time to throw the question back with a different tilt! Why should Praveen Kumar's commitment with a private franchise stop Indian selectors from naming him in a recognized fixture???! It should NOT. Question is - BCCI being BCCI they will try their best to see that this situation does not come to pass in the first place.

I don't think so Vortex. Afterall, Kohli, Tiwari, Dhawan, Mithun etc were named for the fixture despite these guys being busy with their commitment with the private franchises. It is no secret among the experts, fans and even the selectors hat Praveen Kumar can'r bowl with an old ball. So in a test, when the shine wears off after say 15-20, Praveen Kumar will become absolutely useless for the next 60 overs till the new ball is taken. I don't think any team can take that big a risk. So the reason behind Praveen not being chosen had nothing to do with his commitment to franchise
