Dhoni awful captaincy today

Too much wrist slitting going on.
I don't see what's wrist slitting here? Wrist slitting is when some threads pop up and predict us losing before the match is over/being extremely pessimistic. Criticizing some inexplicable and bizarre tactics = wrist slitting?

Aussies are 285/5 and not 350/2. Some of the posts suggest as if it has been a day dominated by Aussies. Dhoni's captaincy was alright except for a brief moment before tea when he had a pakced leg side field for Bhajji but Bhajji kept bowling on the off side and gave easy runs through the covers and point region. Can happen to everyone. BTW even during that last one hour before tea, there were a few chances created , one which went between gully and 2nd slip, a lofted shot that cleared Mukund by a few inches, one that feel short of Vijay, so the strategy of preventing the 4s did work but we were unlucky not to have picked up a wicket during that phase.

Oh then why did he set a deep point even while Sree was bowling (and bowling well)? He expected them to bowl short and wide to the batsmen? The 4 stopping strategy is a load of tosh TBH, then I think we need to set defensive fields from ball 1. And you set a defensive field on a good pitch and wait for the batsmen to make mistakes instead of attacking them?

I thought topic of discussion was Dhoni's captaincy today .not about his captaincy career but anyways I am enjoying it,usual dhoni bashers are at it again:--D

Oh then why didnt Sree turn around say, Captain I am bowling such and such deliveries can you set a field according to it for me.

Well of course the post match presentations and toss, anything else? I guess not. :desiman:

So he set a deep point and thats why you are going hammer and tongs. How about the fact that Zaheer had conceded a few boundaries to Hussey through that region and the Aussies were scoring freely and attacking the bowlers before Sreesanth came onto bowl? And BTW a grand total of 3 runs were scored on the off side in the 4 overs that Sreesanth bowled in spells of 2 overs each pre tea and post tea after Zak had taken Hussey's wicket!! Another thing, check the shot Hussey was trying to play when he got out, dabbing it through the point region for a single but ball moved a little took the edge and went to the Gully fielder!! Stupid indeed :winky: On the 4 stopping thing being loads of tosh, its the same strategy that won the Aussies their lone test series in India in 2004-05 and won India the Nagpur test in the 2008 series vs the Aussies. Again loads of tosh indeed!

To all wrist slitters, he is captain of ICC test XI End of the discussion.
I think Dhoni is a really good captain, but that line of reasoning sucks. Wisden did not include any of Tendulkar's knocks in their top 100 and Finn is the ICC emerging player of the year.

A bowler is allowed to set fields through the captain. He can request field changes as long he bowls to the field

This thread is a masterpiece of whinage led by the usual suspects. On a good batting track they are 285/5. The wicket was not as dicey as initially anticipated. And in cricket you try out different strategies to create opportunities. What whiners...

Where did I say they did score runs off that area? That fielder could've been employed in a more attacking position. Like one edge of :punter: went while the gully area was vacant. I think he was in the 20 something.

If hussey played it for a single, imagine how early hussey would've gone for the lame poke if that region was vacant! Boundaries are much more luring than single.

I'm not sure about the 04'-05' series, but the Nagpur test they were chasing a mammoth target on the fifth day pitch to win the series. Anyways that's not the point here, we might have got wickets irrespective of the placements. How about Nagpur test vs SA? :winky:

If he needs he can suggest, but its captains duty to take care of field strategy. Bowler may or may not complain about the field. Unless the bowler is setting some ploy for the batsmen, ie like bowling short, its unlikely that he'll often interfere with the field placings.

There was no deep point for Punter :--D. More men were on the leg side on the short mid wicket for the uppish drive!! And on the Nagpur test vs the Aussies, read here on what happened

^That was WC Captaincy by Dhoni then. Was a huge fan of that leader dont know what happened to him since 2009. Favouring Legends like Jadeja over other players. He has been very defensive this days.

I'm positive that there was one :punter:, but I may be wrong. About Nagpur test vs, as I said, that was understandable strategy on day 3 as the wicket was a pancake with no much assistance to both pacers and spinners. This strategy should be employed once there was no other option. Don't you feel there's a difference in that with this where there's good turn and bounce, conditions are overcast and two new unsettled batsmen are in? First option is to attack them and only if it didn't work, you use this tactic as a backup. This is common sense here.

' Well do you know who is the Captain of No. 1 test team ? I bet, you do. Ask Dhoni how to win the matches without any all-rounder and GENUINE FAST bowler(s) (someone who could create fear in batsmen's mind like Malinga, Lee, Steyn, Edwards, Akhtar etc. do) Whatever resources Dhoni has, he is managing them very well. THANKS DHONI, If you were not the Captain of Indian Team, we wouldn't have been able to know how it feels being No. 1 . :

Well you know what sitting from outside, I would not lik to read too much into those field placings. Also thats how modern day cricket is being played. Captains try to stifle the opposition for runs and force the batsman to make mistakes. Thats the strategy all the captains around the world have at some of point employed to frustrate the opposition batsmen.TBH I don't find anything wrong in it. And today, Dhoni did not go for that deep point straight after 3rd wicket fell. Only when the batsmen started scoring 4s (they hit 4-5 4s in 2-3overs), did he go for that field. Sitting outside and criticising the decision is all good, but the guy on the field has to make those decision during the run of play. Some days it will work, on occasions it won't come off.
