From a fans perspective, the WC is definitely the ultimate, the pinnacle of achievement in the world of cricket. No bilateral series comes even close, not even the Ashes. From a player perspective, the answer is a no-brainer – It’s the world cup. :D If we do manage to win the WC, then by pure probabilities alone, someone would have played a heroic role. That moment will be immortalized in time and the players will be hailed as the new messiahs. Govt. will allocate land to them, Corporates will be after them with multi-million dollar sponsorship deals and you’ll be in the headlines for months to come. In the case of someone like Joginder Sharma, you just needed to be part of the XI that took the field to turn into an instant millionaire. Unfortunately, the brand value of a WC win has been recently diluted with these bi-annual, two-week long T20 world cup tournaments that make heroes out of zeroes. Because of this, even the 50 over format does not look as alluring as it used to.

Not really. South Africa at home will be very tough to beat. You need to need to play a very high level of test cricket - the real test - and even then, you might not win. I really want India to win in South Africa but even if we manage to draw, I will be delighted. It would mean we have held on to our number 1 status without any one being able to dispute it. Regarding which is more valuable, the World Cup or a test series win in South Africa AND Australia. It is a very tough question. Even though I would like to answer 'the tests' the answer is the World Cup here. The sad reality is that more people in India are affixed to the shorter forms of the game than test cricket. Apart from the big centres like Bangalore and Kolkata, the stadiums for tests are empty like you saw in the first test. India was the World's number 1 test team in early 70s when they beat England (the best team in the world then) and West Indies at their own backyards in consecutive series. There was huge celebration when the team returned back to India with the team members being thronged. However, ask the common man on the street who follows cricket and more likely than not he may not even know about this. Compare that to the World Cup win in 1983. The win was the most important event in not just Indian cricket but world cricket in my mind ahead of even Packer. It made the whole nation cricket crazy. Eventually it brought in so much money into cricket. Given the Indian scenario, the World Cup win HAS to be more valuable even though I would cherish a test series win in South African or Australia more. If we can win both, well that make me delirious for a fair few days. In the Indian context though the world cup ranks higher. There was HUGE hype in the '96 World Cup. With India more sports conscious than ever before with the CWG's passing, the hype, frenzy, anticipation, athmosphere will be out of this world come the World Cup. It will be an acid test for even veterans like Tendulkar and cool cats lilke Dhoni to handle the pressure. If they manage to pull it off, the nation will go mad. First though, India needs to sort it's 5th bowler issue to even think of capturing the World Cup. We still have a bit of time to do that though but whatever.

You can really if you are exposed to the Australians and the Poms. For them, the Ashes has been the biggest prize in cricket from time immemorial. And the answer is the same whether you are a fan or a player. And I am glad you know this as well. :)

Test win in SA and Australia will seal India's position as #1 in cricket regardless of our performance in WC11. It's a home tournament and even if we win the cup, we won't get as much credit as we are expected to win anyways.
