Murali's top 10 batsmen

The problem is they don't have a breakdown on runs which each batsman made against each bowler. WIthout that proper averages cannot be calculated. On Murali vs Ganguly, Gangs used to own Murali in late 90s and early 200s, but the tide changed in mid 2000s and during their last few appearances Murali owned Ganguly. So put as an even battle.

He repeatedly got out to Brad hogg in Australia. I think it got more to do with over-confidence against spinners. Also he was going through a bad patch.

Good to see Azza in there.Purely looking at him playing gave a lot of pleasure. Infact he was more or less a batsman like Ganguly. Style personifed with an aura. If dada was the lord of the off side then Azhar was the king of the leg side. Both were susceptible to short pitch bowling and both played the spinners really well. But I think Azhar had a better record abraod than Ganguly. He has centuries in Aus,SA,Eng and NZ and some of them came at really tough situations and conditions.

Top 10 batsmen from Warne's list of Top 50 cricketers. 1 Sachin Tendulkar 2 Brian Lara 3 Allan Border 4 Ricky Ponting 5 Mark Taylor 6 Mark Waugh 7 Rahul Dravid 8 Graham Gooch 9 Matthew Hayden 10 Aravinda de Silva just thought that this list will add value to whole discussion
I do not know what to make of lists like this anymore. Every player comes up with something every other day as if it matters. Ironically I was reading an Ian Chappell column posted on Cricinfo yesterday. Here is what he has to say. ---- I asked Warne how he thought he performed, following the 2000-01 tour. "I didn't think I bowled that badly," was his response. "You didn't," I replied, "it was just that batsmen like VVS Laxman played you so well." As good as he was, Warne couldn't combat a player who could dance three metres out of his crease and caress the delivery past mid-on and then sashay back to the stumps and pull the next one to the midwicket boundary. I haven't seen a batsman with better footwork than Laxman during that superlative 281 in Kolkata. Below is the link for the entire article. http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/483229.html

Azhar was no doubt a beter Test batsman than Ganguly. But Ganguly never sold his nation for moniez, that makes him stand out. Ganguly was much ahead in ODIs.

I think you did not read my whole post and hence the reaction. I said I liked Azza the batsman before the match fixing fiasco. After that I completely lost respect for him.But the fact remains that he was a very good batsman.

You cant call Ganguly way ahead of him in there as well. Azhar scored 9000+ coming in at 4 or 5, did very well while chasing, was a better fielder, and runner b/w the wickets. But the fact remains that Azhar did something which was and is really-2 shameful.

Otherwise, Azza is a superior batsman to Ganguly in any format.
