ViruRulez Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 LUCKNOW: Rahul Gandhi undertook an unpublicised train journey in the ordinary sleeper class from Gorakhpur to Mumbai ten days ago. His mission was to acclimatise himself with the problems of the people who migrate to the metropolis in search of livelihood. "The Congress general secretary landed at Gorakhpur from a special plane from Bihar and boarded the 2451 Gorakhpur- Lokmanya Tilak superfast express which starts from there in the night," Congress sources said. Gandhi, who had reservation in the sleeper class, preferred the general compartment and spent almost 36 hours talking with the common people migrating to Mumbai from eastern districts of the state in search of livelihood, they said. The sources said the main objective of Rahul's journey was to meet the migrants, youths and unemployed and get to know about their dreams and aspirations. He talked at length with those undertaking the journey for the first time and enquired about the experience of others who had been there earlier, sources said. The Congerss general secretary got off from the train in Mumbai on October 20, the sources said. Meanwhile when asked, ADG law and order, Brij Lal said the state police was not informed about the programme of the Congerss leader. "The SPG extending security did not apprise the state police about the programme and we only know that he took the train from Gorakhpur railway station and travelled in the sleeper class," he said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Rahul-undertakes-train-journey-from-Gorakhpur-to-Mumbai/articleshow/6833613.cms
kumble_rocks Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Good on him ! I doubt of top brass of BJP or Shiv Sena will ever do that.
ravishingravi Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Am I missing something here ? Should these gimmicks be passed of as political and leadership acumen ?
King Tendulkar Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Total gimmick probably end up costing tax payer more as more security needed
kabira Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Why you need to travel in train to get to know their aspirations. There are million other ways to do it.
Precambrian Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 Gimmick. What next? Rahul Gandhi uses indian latrine? media is getting ridiculously sycophantic these days... I've my reservations on this fella... and he has done NOTHING to alleviate that since his entry into politics.. he has done NOTHING extraordinary perhaps not even what an average congress youth worker does, and has become secy only because of his family.. rather than "deserving" it for his ground work...
varun Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 perhaps not even what an average congress youth worker does' date='[/quote'] Honest question. What does an average congress youth worker do anyway ? I remember these guys in Delhi university who used to organize burning of buses etc whenever elections came, and they used to be linked with one party or another.
yoda Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Seems like he is desperate to get the acceptance of the people as one of them given that he his half Italian. Still it seems like his efforts are genuine so I think it is all good.
kumble_rocks Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Guys ! It's not easy to sit in general class compartment and trave. I did this gig when traveled from Mumbai to Hyderabad on train just for the kicks. Their was a pungent smell of human excreta for the whole length of the journey . So kudos to Mr Rahul for pulling this gig !
Clarke Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 What next ? carry a lota and lighten the load outdoors ? That shall be in tune with more than half the country Rahul Baba.

I remember these guys in Delhi university who used to organize burning of buses etc whenever elections came, and they used to be linked with one party or another. Fair question, but the majority of youth guys I know, have their feet planted firmly on the ground, interact with locals, and elevate their problems, contest in local body elections first, then slowly but steadily rise in the ranks... This is just the opposite, first he is handed out a plum positiion in COngress party... now he's doing pretentious stuff to justify it. He is like the Chairman's son appointed as Vice President in a Corporation.
Desi Cartman Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 what an effort by the great man Think about it .. Travelling like an ordinary man ... wow ... what a legend

Good to hear that ! Hope such guys form the next generation of our politicians and don't get corrupted by the system.
CSK Fan Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 what an effort by the great man Think about it .. Travelling like an ordinary man ... wow ... what a legend  As opposed to the other politicians who prefer the chopper for a 4 mile journey. Context matters
seedhi Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 As opposed to the other politicians who prefer the chopper for a 4 mile journey. Context mattersJust about any non-dynasty politician (Nitish, Lalu, Modi, Mayawati etc) has surely traveled by sleeper, general, auto, bus etc many many more times than RG will ever do.

But have they converted it into a major talking point for themselves like RG? Nope.
