I still remember how King Gay Khan -- sent an SMS to Sourav "you are going to be my captain" the day he won the bid for KKR. Sourav was in OZ playing tests. I was like dude you dont even know how Sourav will perform in the shoter version and you already want to sleep with him in the bed ? :--D:--D

MUMBAI: With just a week left for the franchisees to choose the players they want to retain for IPL 4, two of the biggest names are set to be ignored by their respective teams: former India captains Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. As reported by the TOI earlier, Knight Riders have decided to drop Kolkata's prodigal son to revamp the entire side. More importantly, they won't retain any player although they are keen on Chris Gayle. However, as the West Indies' flamboyant opener may not be available for a decent stretch, they may forsake him. Right from IPL 2, there have been suggestions that the franchise was not too happy with Ganguly. Now, they have reconciled to going into the new league without his dominating presence. "We have to see how the Kolkata fans will take this. It is sure to create at least some bit of unrest," an official involved with the developments conceded. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers have given up on Dravid, given the cap on the number of players a team can retain. "We have to understand that retaining a player blocks quite a bit of money. It is cheaper to pick players at the auction," explains a source. Interestingly, Anil Kumble, who proved to be an inspirational captain and is now the KSCA president too, is very much on the Challengers' list. Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor are the other players they are quite keen on. Delhi Daredevils have, meanwhile, gone ahead and signed a contract with Virender Sehwag. However, they are yet to do the same with Gautam Gambhir, the other part of the opening pair. Therefore, as of now, the left-hander's future in Delhi's scheme of things is doubtful. "I can confirm to you that we have signed up Sehwag but I cannot say anything on Gambhir. You will have to wait till December 5," B Vachi, Director Sports for the GMR Group told TOI. Chennai Super Kings is the only team that has retained all four players. Expectedly, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, along with Suresh Raina, Murli Vijay and South African all-rounder Albie Morkel, have been held back. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have wasted absolutely no time in signing up Indian cricket's most prized possession: Sachin Tendulkar. Beyond him, however, the franchise is tight-lipped. MI are serious on retaining players for all four slots and had in fact requested BCCI -ahead of the November 28 governing council meeting - to increase the number of players to be retained from four to six. However, with BCCI turning down that request, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Kieron Pollard and Lasith Malinga are still waiting to know about their future in MI. "Ambati Rayudu is an uncapped player and so is R Sathish. They can sign contracts outside of the auction. Saurabh Tiwary is a capped player but MI have submitted his name for the player auctions. Pollard is a favourite but again, it's a question of his availability," a key official told TOI. Likewise, Daredevils have three more players in mind and may take a decision on them in the next couple of days. Australian pacer Dirk Nannes, along with Dinesh Karthik and Ashish Nehra, are their other choices. "Karthik is important because all good wicket-keeper-batsmen will be in demand at the auction," explains an official. Among other big names not being retained, Chennai have decided to let go of Matthew Hayden and Muralitharan. Chargers are not interested in holding back IPL-winning captain Adam Gilchrist either, nor Rohit Sharma. "Even VVS Laxman is out. They had picked Laxman in the first place because he was from Hyderabad but he just doesn't fit their requirements," an official said. RCB, meanwhile, are letting go of Kallis and Robin Uthappa

So, should he try his luck by being in the common pool, which might mean getting much less money than even newcomers and domestic players, or, should he retire from IPL with dignity?

The likes of Kumble and Ganguly should step down, their time is up. Ganguly is playing Ranji game to get fit for IPL, why would he do that, he is blocking a youngster spot for the Ranji game.

What for collecting the money just for showing up? What exactly does he have to offer in a 20-20 game? KKR did the right thing by deciding to letting him go. Hope the news is true.

He cannot use the Bengal Ranji team as a means to get match fit for another domestic event that too a private entity with rich financial returns. I do not understand some of these guys. He wants to appear in a Ranji game in December for getting ready for a 20-20 game that is supposed to start in April. This surely got to be some kind of a joke.

Ganguly should have retired because he has nothing more to offer and that would be the most dignified response Dravid/Laxman should have retired because his 1 or 2 more years in test cricket is much more important than IPL and its not like they are carrying their team like Sachin Kumble is retired from International cricket and is still good in IPL. It's upto the players to do what they want but Ganguly, Dravid or Laxman playing in IPL is not going to matter much to their teams. Better they retire before they get bought for 100,000 $ or not at all.

As a bowler, Jumbo still has to offer a lot, considering the way he bowled in last 2 IPL + CL, but ya, may be time has come for Dada/RD to hang the boot as far as IPL is concerned
