Big Cricketing Talents who failed miserably in Indian cricket

The anti-thesis to all this is Mohammed Kaif who despite his mediocre talent got to represent India in so many games despite being not good enough. Consider this since being dropped from the Indian side and rightly so in FC cricket he is no match to Badrinath' date=' Jaffer, Rahane, Mukund to name a few head to head and these batsman never ever got the extended run that this useless batsman got. Leave alone extended runs. Some of them did not or not even got a sniff at the Indian team. Now the true colors are out.[/quote'] Dude you are being over critical of Kaifu. Not that I am a huge fan of his but if he has played at the int'l level for 5 years then he would have done something. You are talking about his averages and all. Picture this. He was mainly a middle order batsman who was made to bat at #7 in ODIs for the most part of his career. And he never was a big hitting batsman. He was more of a hit and run kind of a player. And a person coming in at #7 is bound to have a bad average. Agreed that he was made to come in at #4 later and he did average. As for the test side IMO he earned his place by all means. He scored heavily in the Ranji Trophy and hence came into the side. Which is the best possible route than coming in via IPL. He did okayish here as well. Scored a 50 against Austrailia and a 90 against England when all our batters struggled. Also scored a 100 in WI but then it does not count. He was never supremely talented but what are your supremely taleneted guys doing? He is more like Paul Collingwood or a poor man's Steve Waugh. And one more thing which went against him was the way Guru Greg handled him. He completely phased him out within 1 year of his tenure.

In terms of big cricketing talents only Kambli was the big cricketing talent who went on a path of self-destruction. He did not fail initially and scored a lot better than Sachin to be frank. He only followed the path of destruction later on. Out of the rest in the list I would say almost all the others were mediocre/good players and not the BIG cricketing talents.
With BIG I mean Guys who were talented to play little longer then they did, i mean if i or you had that much of talent we would have worked harder and represented India longer.. Just see if Kaif had the talent of a VRV Singh.. he would have worked harder and even be in the 11 still.. I mean kaif is such hardworking and wud have played longer had He got the talent of VRV. i have given the examples of Kambli and VRV.. they r good talents.. I though agree Kambli was the BIGGEST Talent to MISFIRE. Gold Goes to Kambli Silver Goes to VRV . Bronze is still to be discussed.

I wont hold the lack of footwork against him. These days more and more batsmen are technically imperfect but still score runs. Sehwag leads the lot. He connected his shots and thats what mattered.
Mate Sehwag's completely different material. And he has fared well worldwide. While Ramesh was more of an Indian Sub continent player who struggled in whatever chances he got abroad. HE was pathetic as an opener in Australia. Its one thing not scoring and another thing not looking like scoring a run and he fell under the second category. As for the performances that you are counting against Wasim,Waqar then he played against them in WC 99 when SG opted out. And he limped to a 20. Looked completely out of sorts against the same opposition whom he belted in India.

Hmm..Ok.. Players coming in at No.6 and No.7 are bound to have bad average. A certain Bevan certainly comes to mind. And Guru Greg phased him out or is a certain series in SA 2006 ODI's where he was not able to put the bat on to the ball that did him in. Chappell in fact tried his best to hang on to this guy, but it was the selectors that were forced to get him out because he was useless to say the least before the WC and recall Ganguly after the SA series 2006. That says it all.

Ramesh, Balaji, Badrinath, L.Siva, V.B.Chandrashekar, Sharath, T.A.Sekar, M.Kartik(he represented Railways though). I havent seen some of them play- just named them based on what I've heard and whats been written.
Ramesh -YES. Bala Ji-Yes Badrinath still has chance so he has not phased out so he still among the Big players who will play.. i would want that I do not put his name ever into this list and he plays for India for a long time. This list is not some thing one needs to be proud of.. this is of big talents who misfired. SIVAramkrishnan-perfect example. VB chandreshekhar- cant say whether he was talented enuf to play for India. Sharath- NO TA Shekhar- he may be YES but Kapil did not let him come possibly. Karthik - Yes.. as he is kinda growing older now but shud have played more for India instead of US clubs.

Frankly speaking VRV never impressed me at all Even Munaf impressed me a lot more than VRV. I am not sure I would call him very talented. As I said only Kambli is the one whom I would call very talented amongst the list you mentioned in the first post.

I did watch Cricket in 2006. Agreed that he was pathetic in that year but he was constantly sent in at #4 and #7. And it is very difficult to make those kind of adjustments. Ok I take back my point that I made against Guru Greg. That was far fetched.

Have you ever watched kaif bat? The guy could not hold a bat properly and his stance was more akin to visiting a toilet. Tragic awful player who made the most of the talent he had which was zero. One of the worst batters to get that many caps for India ever

you're talking about the exception rather than the rule........Beven was one of the very few players to have a very good average at that position.

Munaf is also nearing to be phased out .. dont u agree Munaf was a big talent who definitely is a big talent who has got all bowlers to go ahead of him.. he bowled at 145 K against england today he bowls at 110K...i was really disappointed to see his bouncers coming at 117K against newzealand....I can face him today as I have faced bowlers bowling at 115 K to 120 K at AZAD Maidan Mumbai. Munaf - a Big Failure.

Wasim Jaffer anyone?
He is a talented player but for him I'd say it was not a case of him playing badly but a case of others (Gambhir and Viru) playing just too well to let him come back into the team once he was dropped. He is still making lots of runs and is the highest scorer for Mumbai this season and may still come back.

He played for a while for INDIA is a hardworking cricekter and could not have a long career as sehwag gambhir were better... actually he was fighting it out with gambhir but marginally missed...he is not a failure .. he played for quite some time and could have played more but is a great batsman...Vishal

Totally AGree.. is a great Opener ...

Jaffer was an elegant batsman but one bad series in Australia where he made a fool of himself against Lee and then emergence of Gambhir made it sure that Jaffer was never going to play for India again

Agree, I dont know why VRV Singh is in this list- He is a normal bowler who can bat a bit lower down, nothing more than that.

S Sriram ?
None other than Rahul Dravid rated him a great talent and tipped him for higher laurels a few years back. I know from some accounts of him from the folks in India who follow cricket at the grass roots level. This guy is a gem. Very studious, disciplined that gave it all but never got the call ups he deserved when he was still at his prime and slowly rode off into the sun set as it turned out to be. 32 FC centuries at a 55 average is not something to be taken lightly of. Sriram is one example of where FC is not given the weight the hype and importance U-19 success is given. And we all know what a big bust YS turned out to be in Tests and Kaif overall to name a couple. When both are relegated to the FC ranks they are no match to the Badri's, Sriram's, Muzumdar's, Jaffers of the world when it comes to temperament and quality. Not saying Sriram would have been a grand success at the international level but you will never know unless one gets enough chances.
