If I am not wrong 1.8m is 20% of team budget. I would not invest that amount on an asset that would be profitable "somewhere in future".

that only makes you a poor long term investor. but long term investments are and can be made. they are about eventual payoffs if you have confidence he/they are the right people who will serve your interests for a very long period.

I don't think 1.8mil means the player retained gets that amount. Its only that the Franchise gets 1.8mil deducted from its auction kitty and so on. Hence, the player retained might be earning quite a bit less. Eg: Warne and Kohli are noways getting 1.8mill contracts. It would be around 0.5-0.8mil each for both of them, or as negotiated.
