Went to Pichavaram Mangrove forest 16 KM from Chidambaram/ 40~ KM from Pondycherry

  • Boat officials told me that forest is spread across 3000 hectares
  • 100-200 people visiting during weekdays and 1000-2000 people visit during weekends/festival days/govt holidays.
  • This Pichavaram was officially added as tourist spot after tsunami destroyed a village which consisted of 500 families + schools + temples but only 90 families survived and they were given home in nearby village
  • Pichavaram village was unaffected completely by tsusuami due to heavy mangrove forset

They get nearly 10-20k for 1-2 days trip and rest for two weeks. J16qt0El.jpg Pathways between water plants surrapunnai(called by locals) are very confusing. As per the officials they are nearly 1000 pathways in whole forest. Only the boat people knows each path since they have been working there for 15+ years. 36qcf2Xl.jpg RxLrKDNl.jpg Photos taken using Galaxy S3 running custom rom so pics quality won't be good and iam not a pro photographer.

gdOdy3ql.jpg 13fsve7l.jpg These water plants grow roots down to earth surface and absorb oxygen from water through roots, they are firmly fixed to ground..can't be removed easily. Local villages uses these plants as herbs and medicines iHelYVil.jpg HV5tIbCl.jpg LiOmrgIl.jpg mErGuPHl.jpg Lg9pzfXl.jpg OpVI9iil.jpg
