THE ASHES : 3RD TEST DAY 2: Day 1 ended with England on top and started in same fashion as cook and strauss got them through 1st hour but suddenly introduction of Mitchell Johnson led to fight back of the aussie and such fightback that england were folded out for 187 from 78/0. And after that england came just little back with 2 wkts but Watson was unmoved and he was joined by the man who came back to form in 1st Test Michell Hussey. At stumps australia managed to score 119/3 Watson 61 Hussey 24 Finn 2 n Tremlett 1 In total Australia lead by 200 runs. Frankly i beleive england with a chance if they restrict australia to 325-350 simply bcoz perth will now strt to loose the bounce it had in the 2 days. GO ENGLAND

LOL...Yes that is true and this is how it works Since the original decision was not out and England challenged it it was ruled not out because more than half of the ball should be hitting the middle of the leg-stump meaning grazing the leg-stump would be not out in this case since the umpire turned down the appeal. Conversely if the umpire ruled it out in the same case and the Australian batsman challenged again the umpiring decision would stand meaning the batsman would have been out because of the reason I explained i.e, grazing leg stump will not be overturned even though a portion of the ball is hitting the leg-stump as per the hawkeye. In other words umpire's original verdict will stand in case of challenges to very marginal decisions and that is fair enough. In this case the umpire's decision regards to Steven Smith prevailed by a millimeter or so.

The idea of UDRS was primarily to eliminate howlers blatant decisions sometimes missed by the umpires. And that decision to rule Steven Smith not out was indeed very marginal and not a howler. Plus these are the guidelines both teams signed off on and so there should be no issues whatsoever.
