Comparison of the possible India world cup XI with ex-champs lanka of the '96 juggernaut fame.. This is based on the '96 form of lankan players compared to our players '10.. Captaincy Ranatunga = Dhoni Keeping Kaluwithrana=Dhoni Batting Jayasurya = Sehwag Kaluwithrana << Tendulkar Aravinda > Gambhir Gurusinha = Kohli Mahanama < Raina Ranatunga >> Yuvraj Tilekaratne > Dhoni Bowling Murali >> Harbhajan Dharmasena < Ashwin Vaas < Zaheer Wickeramasinghe < Praveen K B]AllRounders Jayasurya,Aravinda >> Yuvraj,Raina,Sehwag I think our team is quite close overall to the lankan team of 96

Sorry to be blunt, but these comparisons dont mean anything. It doesnt matter how good or bad our team is, compared to the'96 world cup winning Lankan team. What matter is how good or bad we are, with our current opponents. P.S; Oh btw, it wasnt just the personnel that propelled Lanka to the WC glory back in 96. More importantly, it was their brand of attacking top order batting and stifling spin bowling that did for them. That is definitely food for thought for anyone trying to draw a winning strategy for a world cup in the subcontinent.

for all thier money's worth a more cohesive team without any superstars can defeat both these teams. both the teams have weaknesses. lanka 96 was one of the most entertaining teams alltime... they had specimens unseen and unheard

If I was allowed to then..I'd have put all my money on Lanka winning it after watching their first 2 games in the WC... there was no way I could see any team beating them in that tournament.. We have a pretty similar brand of ODI team too.... marauding batters... stifling spinners..and seamers who just seem to do the job, although they may get hammered..

Except for the fact that while this particular brand of cricket may have taken teams by surprise in ’96, it is not going to be the case in 2011.

we are a step ahead in batting compared to them bowling... they are a lightyear ahead. when they were playing... it was like as if circus was in town... "look at murali's face when he delivers" "look jayasurya can bowl wow" "look at lil kalu smashing" "wow desilva can cut knives which are meant to cut" "look at the fat man run"

Exactly.. what matters is how good we are with respect to the teams around, and how we deliver on the crunch. These comparisons mean jacksheet.
