Hey guys! I'm looking to send my niece to boarding school in India. This process, and idea, is completely new to me so I thought I'd talk it over with you guys. There's some issues with her in India and we feel it's best if she can get away from it all. We are looking for schools in the Delhi - Ghaziabad- Noida area. A quick google search indicates there are plenty going around. Some questions for you. How safe are boarding schools these days ( such a variable question I know, but still). Have you been to one or know anyone who has been to one ? What was your/their experience like? My niece is 15 years old and in the 9th grade, born in bred in Ghaziabad. Do you know if most of these schools are co-ed? Also, any idea how much the monthly expenses would be ? I'm in the process of e-mailing these people, but still if anyone knows that would be great. Thanks!

Are you open to sending her to Dehradun/Mussoorie ? its 250km from gaziabad, plenty of good girls boarding schools. These are small places dont have the kind of distractions Delhi boarding school provide and they work hard on disciplining the child if that is the areas you need help in. Hostals are safe , kids are only allowed out of campus during specified hrs majority of time under supervision (though kids always find ways to break out but that happens everywhere); dont send her there if you arent comfortable but i strongly suggest you visit schools there you will know what i mean.

Kodaikanal or ooty. Beautiful and the south is a lot more safer.

thanks guys for the reply!! I am definitely open to sending her to dehradun or mussorie....I'll look into it. What are some common "distractions" in the Delhi boarding schools that you talked about?

another quick question...what is the difference between residential schools and boarding schools? Do boarding schools keep the kids for 12 months a year and residential skills send them home on summer vacations?

Why Boarding School man??
Yep, same question. It is advantageous for kids to be with parents when they grow up. There are certain things and those times wont return once they've grown up.

I have a lot of cousins who have studied in Boarding schools, guys as well as girls. By and large it worked out well for them. But they were all in the higher end boarding schools. I guess if you can afford the fees and are able to get admission in places like Scindia, Welhams, Dun etc. then it's worth it. Studies are not anything great compared to any other good school, but there is good overall personality development and these places have a very strong alumni network which can come quite useful later on in life. Boarding schools in Delhi can be notorious for drug abuse, late night partying etc. These dangers are there in other places as well, but quite minimal in isolated boarding schools.

Growing up with my parents and my community I'll never forget what they taught me. Unfortunately, she's having a very tough time at her house....let's just say her life is hell right now. We think it's best to have a change of scenery...so she can develop into something. She's 15, not a small kid....she realizes herself that nothing is going to come out of her life if she stays at home. She has no positive role model to look after and no one to guide her...life is unfortunate for this poor girl.

Thanks for the reply professor sahab. At this stage, I think personality development is something we are most concerned about. She's a smart kid, just very neglected. Fees aren't a problem, even if they are expensive we can work hard and pool resources. How much do you think they will cost ? Also....the tough question is do we send her to a boarding school in Noida, with chances of drug abuse etc. but where we can keep an eye on her and check up on her? Or send her to an isolated boarding school that's far away....but less of an opportunity to make sure she's OK. I appreciate everyone's replies...

[/quote'] Thats a very tough question indeed. A compromise would be if you can send her to a good boarding school, (even if far away) but in a place where you can have a local guardian - some trustworthy family or friend who lives in or around that area of the school who can check up on her. But I realize you may or may not have option for such an arrangement. Wishes and Good luck to your niece, Shehez.

I am not sure what the current fees etc. are at these places as my cousins graduated around 8-10 years back. But I would guess around $600-800/month including fees and other expenses at places like Welhams and Sherwood. Probably half of that at other schools.

Pretty much impossible for me to comment on as the decision would be completely dependent on the individual situation etc. Another thing is that almost everyone I know was in boarding school from a very young age like 6-7 years old. The adjustment process and challenges for them would be completely different than for a 15 year old. By the time these guys were 15, most of them would itch to go back to school after a few weeks at home during vacation. But the best part is that once there, the schools keep students so busy and occupied in different activities that there is very little time to miss home. Sports, extracurriculars etc. are all mandatory activities and combined with the school workload, which itself is quite a lot in 9-12, it is going to be a very busy life.

Indeed. I had my both the daughters in boarding schools. Both for two years. One in india in an international shcool, (9 months school, 3 mos break) and other one here in NY (3 mos term, 3 mos break). Now they both are back with us. Parenting is not easy task, and these decision should be taken in the best interest of your kids. They are kept very busy all day. You can talk to them once a week. They like it there. They become more responsible and independent. Singing, dancing, sports, team projects, Plays/Dramas/Short skits, field trips, picnic and best of all, getting acquainted w/ nature. The down side though that kids are at the risk of catching up bad habbits. Also as a parent, you have absolutely tough time w/ your kids are so far away. GOOD luck to your niece.
