Don’t make it sound as though there are multiple ways to view Irfan’s career. The fact of the matter is, he took those wickets and scored those runs, against whoever it maybe. He wasn’t gifted any of those achievements. And btw, while you’re at your stat-clipping, why don’t you clip Bradman’s stats for the games he played against England and see how many runs he scored. In the period between 2004 and 2005, Irfan was without doubt, one of the standout players in all of international cricket. He was named ICC emerging player of the year in 2004. His bowling was absolutely instrumental in helping us win our first test series in Pakistan in many years in 2004. Were Pakistanis minnows back then as well? Do you know that he averaged 35 with the bat and 25 with ball in ODIs in the year 2005 and arguably the best ODI player of that year, in that year. Were all those feats against minnow teams? I’ll happily welcome the Irfan Pathan of 2004-05 back into the team, any time of the day. Now, whether he is capable of recovering his lost form is an entirely different question altogether. But the fact that he is one of the standout talents to emerge from Indian cricket in the last 20 years is undeniable.

You can look at it that way. I am not too much of an awe with the BD and the recent Zim. Test teams where Test matches are gotten over in 3 days or less for most part. They are too incompetent for my tastes. So when I analyze players I ignore performances versus Ban and Zim. If that is unacceptable to you so be it.

One gulp does not make a summer. If epithets can be written about players based on one or two good seasons there are dime a dozen such players. And while we are at it he is there for his bowling and let us not mix up things here by bringing in his batting which is a definite bonus if he can justify his place for his bowling in Tests. While you can dwell all you want on that phase between 2004 and 2005 his overall career in 25 Tests without the minnows is down right pathetic with 46 runs per wicket taken. I do not see anything that is exceptional with Pathan and there is a reason he was dropped post 2007 early 2008. He is just not up to the task and is mediocre with the ball. That is the bottom line for him being shunted out. I do not see anything that has changed since to be optimistic.

We often fall in love with players for what they have accomplished in a short span of time and be longing for them to come back to those levels. That is all good in theory. Let us see how Pathan competes with the players he goes up against in the domestics when he comes back especially with the ball. If he one of the top performers for a sustained amount of time then he will be selected. That remains to be seen. Till then no one is missing him. Coming to standout talents I have heard a lot of such names being floated around all the time. Unless it comes to fruition in the name of serving the team for a reasonable period of time with good performances it is all talk and nothing else.

County stints hopefully do somehting good for him. He will be out of the media glare and concentrate on his bowling. But then, it did not help Sreesanth that much as well did it?

Also, having the keeper stand up to his bowling will only detriment him as it will cause him to bowl a shorter length.

It is good in a way that he has taken one full year off to recover from the injury rather than playing through it. Hope he remains patient and works hard to get back his old wrist position, action...everything to rediscover that banana swing! India desperately needs a test bowler. If he captures his old form back, it'll be great!!

fast bowlers dont bounce back....as ZAK , srinath ,brett lee and many have shown there body only tires and tires more.. Fast bowling is one of the toughest JOBS to do and GOD doesnot make a human being so strong n fit that he can control his fitness to that extent for a long period of time.... people say Kapil was most fit but truth is that he bowled slower during his last 3 to 4 years post knee operation...he could not go back to his supremme fitness anymore. dont u guys agree
