akshayxyz Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Looks like you did not read my post carefully because right in my opening para I have said he will go down as the greatest captain in our history already. I find this poll of trying to put him over Ganguly ridiculous because it is most illogical and unwarranted. If winning the WC is the benchmark for you than why isn't Kapil Dev's side in there in the poll? Why? He won it in foreign soil when India was poorest playing abroad so shouldn't his achievement be more than Dhoni's win at home where his team's biggest strength was compared to Kapil's? Can you say with certainty that we would have won so well if this final were in SL in Colombo with their spinners coming hard at us? . . . Every generation has a captain and a team who represents the hopes of that age and era and here there can never be any comparison. The day fans start fighting over their own teams achievements led by different captains is the day our cricket loses. :hatsoff: Another top post. You are quite knowledgeable and good at organizing your thoughts and expressing them. Also I admire your patience to write such a big post again. :hatsoff: But looks like you just ended up feeding a troll. In any case, I hope your posts will open eyes of some people blinded by only recent memories.
King Tendulkar Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 He is a great captain no doubt. Best then dada? difficult to say as end of day a captain is only as good as players he has.
Guest Gunner Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Thread locked, enough! As someone up there said Ganguly laid the foundation and Dhoni completed the job. We owe both of them a lot. They are the best, forget the rest.
Guest Gunner Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Owing to popular demand thread opened. Keep in line kids, one racist or dirty remark about either of our great captains will receive an infraction or worse a ban. Debate the merits not the person.
Guest Shivani Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Ganguly is DADA Mahi is GUNDA I LOVE BOTH :icflove: MAHI a lil more :icflove: :icflove:
ganeshran Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Dhoni is more calmer than Ganguly and handles pressure situations better,
pinkfreud Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 No Indian captain has achieved what Dhoni has for Team India. End of.
Midfielder Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I think it would be extremely selfish not to thank Dada for his contribution to Indian cricket. He built the self belief in these guys and left a very strong platform for Dhoni to launch from. I would personally like to thank Dada from the the bottom of my heart as this win is because of his contributions too. For the record I am not a Bengali.

Dada only introduced that killer instinct - as a team- in the dressing room.
Vikas Bhatt Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Thank you Sachin=GOD, Andy, akshayxyz and Midfielder for the words of support and for backing me. Appreciate it. people should not get too emotional and myopic in their thought processes and I know you guys agree too. I am not a Bengali and too date despite what happened Azhar is still my fav batsman and captain because I was a teenager when he was at his best in both roles. But he managed what no other captain did before - Whitewash teams 3-0. in tests [even if in India], win 10 finals titles of series with three or more sides [compare to our choking record afterwards]. He beat SL in test series on their own homesoil something we have failed to do since. His side beat Aus in tests, a tradition Ganguly maintained later. Ganguly's side returned undefeated in tests from an Aus when Aus was at it's peak. They came back from 1 down at Kolkotta despite follow on and scripted the greatest comeback in history. He led us to a WC final. He beat Pakistan in Pak in both forms of the game. Dravid led us to our first test win on SA soil ever. He also won us series in WI and Eng 20 years after Ajit Wadekar first won us the same overseas. SRT won the only 3 test series against SA for us ever and started our domination of Aus in tests with that one off test in Delhi. Kapil won the WC and the mini Wc in Aus. Kumble's side won a test in Aus's fastest venue of Perth where we have always struggled to put up 150 runs per innings. Nawab Pataudi won in NZ 3-1 while Dhoni's team has hardly managed to beat NZ's weakest side 1-0 both at home and away. Dhoni has a 1-1 which stands out apart from that below par 1-0 score against NZ. For a lot of people T20s and that 'WC' hardly counts for much. It's not considered proper cricket to judge at all, Euphoria of that win notwithstanding. That yardstick can't be used to measure previous generations because that form of game didn't exist before for them to play, lead and deliver in. Every team has it's strengths and weaknesses. You can see stepping stones everywhere especially last 10 years since Ganguly took over. Dhoni has been a great captain but even he is not prone to chickening out when faced with pressure of losing a 1-0 lead as witnessed in NZ and later against England at home where like Wadekar, Dravid and Ganguly, he was also content to sit over a 1-0 lead instead of trying for a 2-0 despite being in a commanding position in the last test of those series. People should learn to take the positives out and leave the rest to experience. Take the best off it and leave the rest for future generations to draw their lessons from. :hatsoff:
Shane Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Dhoni is very unIndian like in his captaincy. His style reminds of the tenacious Steve Waugh, knows only to win. Doesnt show any emotions, not self centered, takes the pressure on himself. As Imran Khan put it, He is not a Captain, but a Leader.
Vikas Bhatt Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Steve Waugh was not fearless or brilliant. He was calm yes. But he was a dull unimaginative captain. The beauty of his tenure was he was never tested due to brilliant batsmen like Hayden/Punter/Martyn, all-rounders like Gilchrist and all time great bowlers like Gillespie, McGrath and Warne. His plan was always about unleashing his top class bowlers who could get any side out twice in a test cheap and so it afforded his batsmen to bat freely knowing any score they made was defendable. Waugh was tested very less when his bowlers could not rise and when he was confronted with pressure on rare such occasions he was found severely wanting as he never had a plan B. That classic test at Kolkotta where once his bowlers failed against Dravid/Laxman after enforcing the follow on he had no clue how to turn the pressure back or turn the game his way again. That test in WI where Sarwan/McGrath spat took place and where they couldn't stop WI getting 415 runs batting 4th and winning the test. He was out of ideas again once his bowler failed to get things done on their own. The 2004 series in Aus stands out when he had neither Warne, Gillespie and McGrath were out to injury, he came close to losing the series against us and only our own ineptitude allowed him to escape with a draw at Sydney. Both his and Ponting's captaincy have hit dead ends in India and Lanka where they have never delivered as captains worth their reputation under high pressure. Like I said before Aus simply had such a fantastic complete team in all departments they never needed a captain. Same was the case with Ponting. He too walked Waugh's path. It's not a coincidence they both enjoyed the same level of success till the greats were in the team before retirement. Without the same bowlers and all round players Punter is not even winning games at home soil anymore. Both have been poor at drawing matches as captains in face of defeat as they they simply were never put to such situations where they needed to think differently or needed to adapt to the pressure and this was simply because of bowlers like Warne, McGrath and Gillespie. Without his champion bowlers Ponting has struggled at home against SA, India and Eng and has lost very badly in England and India. It is here that both Taylor and Border scored as imaginative captains and string man managers. Waugh or Ponting could never have turned a losing test on it's head into a tied test or a 1 run win in a crunch WC semifinal like Border did against India. Ponting and Waugh despite having had their great bowlers failed to win tests in India while Gilchrist as stand in captain when Ponting was injured in 2005 beat us in tests on our own home soil. What does that tell you about both Waugh's and Ponting's 'brilliant' captaincy? In contrast Stephen Flemings and Ranatungas were better captains because they captained limited or average sides and yet achieved a lot of success without great players in the side. If Ganguly or Dhoni had bowlers like Allan Donald/Warne/McGrath/Gillespie and WK like Gilchrist who could hit huge 100s anywhere under any situation, do you think any side would have succeeded against us even in a single test? Our captains would have used them much better in every situation. Dhoni is better captain than either Waugh or Ponting because he has a limited bowling attack at his disposal and so he uses his resources to the best possibility in pressure situations. The reason why we need the likes of Laxman and Dravid to draw so many tests we could have won or lost was because we never had enough strong bowlers who could finish the job and strangle the opposition like the past Aus and WI bowlers did. There can be no comparison here between Dhoni and Waugh/Punter.
vaibhav_delhi Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 dhoni - coolness personified, backs his players, leads from the front, street-smart, takes brave decisions, soaks in all the pressure, Bats as well as keeps wickets, has great work ethic. He has cemented his name as an ONE OF THE GREATEST CAPTAINS IN HISTORY OF CRICKET, n here we are still comparing him with ganguly(who himself was very good n a legend, but obviously dhoni is far superior).
akshayxyz Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 ^ did you even read what Vikas wrote? Or your mind can process only 2-3 statements long posts?

Dhoni has achieved a lot in very less time and deserves every praise thats coming his way :hatsoff: All we're saying is that in all the euphoria of winning the WC and showering praises on Dhoni, we should not forget the contribution of Ganguly in building this team and backing a lot of the players who make the core of this WC winning side.

What I meant is that even if you don't look at achievements, Dhoni is visibly the better captain on field by a great margin.....
Sachin=GOD Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 What I meant is that even if you don't look at achievements' date=' Dhoni is visibly the better captain on field by a great margin.....[/quote'] Visibly on the field I'm yet to see a more confident Captain in World Cricket than Sourav Ganguly. Dhoni is Captain cool and composed.
Andy Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 One thing about Dhoni is that he wins the toss or Not, never Lets the Game drift away. During Ganguly's Days there were Many occasions where we lost the toss in a Final, Bowled first and the Opposition scored 300+ quite regularly. This doesnt Happen with Dhoni too Often, so for me with this Resource I believe Dhoni is better Than Sourav Ganguly. But I would give credit to Sourav Ganguly for building the Foundation of New India, there was a Time when he brought in majority of the Stars we have, and made them in One team. I am not sure whether Dhoni can do it, once the Legends retire, So i'll wait and See. Lets not forget we would have gone Nowhere without Both the Captains. Sourav Ganguly Started it and Dhoni Finished it.
