'Only Ponting can beat Tendulkar's record'

For those who like to calculate from 1 Jan 2001: Nothing changes much as can be seen from http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;opposition=1;opposition=2;opposition=3;opposition=4;opposition=5;opposition=6;opposition=7;opposition=8;spanmax1=1+Jan+2011;spanmin1=1+Jan+2001;spanval1=span;template=results;type=batting After removing BD and Zim, Tendulkar is still behind Ponting and below Indian batsmen like Sehwag and Laxman (in terms of average)! He is on par with Dravid, who has fractionally ahead. Batsman - Avg Sehwag and Ponting - 55 Laxman - 53 Dravid and Tendulkar - 51 :P

just out of curiousity' date=' does tendulkar's innings today count as a performance under pressure[/quote'] Lol don't kid yourself. Ask the experts on pressure they'll tell you there was no pressure because Gambhir has also scored runs, kallis himself hit 160. Anyways they're 1st innings runs, so they're automatically discarded

Definitely no pressure, for the following reasons: Not batting with tailenders Only 2 wickets down Other end also playing well (in fact opener). Not even half century yet. Already some other guy scored 150+ score. Series already level at 1-1. Not 4th innings. Flattest track of the series. Himself scored well previously on this pitch. On top of all - this is the start of the new decade, hence no pressure to outscore others./create selfish records.

Looks like Kallis is going to take over from Ponting as main rival for Tendulkar's records. He has been on fire off late.
Yes - he is fit and has at least 2 good years of cricket left. 2 years - 10-12 centuries, 3K runs not impossible..but, that assumes Sachin retires after this match and Kallis continues this run of form for next 2-3 years. And Ponting never regains his form or is just dropped/retires permanently Most likely he will end up just behind Sachin. ( BCCI and Sachin would ensure that :) ). And it will be a interesting neck-to-neck competition between Kallis, Ponting and may be Dravid too.

And add to that, he is not even playing for his place in team so how this innings could be innings under pressure??

Is it a surprise that you didn't find those who made claims abt Ten being ahead of Ponting in the 2000s to be trolling but a respone to that is. :giggle: Stop trolling against me :P

Pressure will come in the 4th innings of this test when the series is on the line. Yes, it sounds like a cliche, that's just the way it is. It is all relative. It is not that there is no pressure at all here, hope you guys understand the difference between this situation and the one VVS batted in the 2nd test/2nd innings on a bowler's paradise, facing a series losing proposition if he failed. Then again, it seems like some of you are arguing just for the sake of it, so may be you will refuse to accept that you understand the difference even if you clearly do.

Current situation is as pressure situation as it could be. A series is on very much on line and India was reduced to 28/2 by the time Sachin came to bat. Now, from if here on Sachin goes on to play and take India to a safe total, some will say that Sachin always knew that there are batsman to follow him so there was no pressure on him and it wasn't a crisis situation. If Sachin fails and other players also capitulize then some will say that see he failed again when it was required. Anti-incumbents will always win in these silly arguments and they don't have to defend any thing and can attack everything minor or major without looking at the perspective.

Pretty much sums up direction and outcomes of most of the forum debates. A small correction though - no one wins/loses - everyone assumes they won/did-not-lose.
