That is impressive stat for frist 5 years. However, there haven't been a single test player (careers spanning 10-15+ yrs) w/o a bad patch ( even Don was not spared). How Cook performs in his bad phase, i.e. how good is his bad-game(bottom-line), would define where he ends up at the end of his career.

I reckon 14,000+. There will be bad patches and he might miss a few Tests through injury, but he is an established member of the side and England play so much Test cricket that 110 Tests more or so is realistic over the next 10-11 years.

He is a good player but IMO someone like DeVilliars is much better. I expect Cook to make around 12k with around 35-40 centuries and that would be a huge achievement.

Also a reflection of how much test cricket England play. Tendulkar only played about 38 tests in his first 6 years. Cook would have played about double that in his first 6 years.

Well, he's been appointed ODI captain now so will be playing that form of the game more regularly.

it amazing how quickly indians dismiss non-indian batsmans achievements; sehwag whom we call a great at 31 is around 7500 runs

Sehwag is called a great coz he averages 53 with 2 triples and around 5-6 doubles with a strike rate hovering near 80, and that too as an opener.

Now that England have won the Ashes twice, he is probably one Ashes failure away from being dumped. Jokes apart, he has a great record and looks set to be the 1st Englishman to go past 10K runs. But like many Englishmen previously, he may actually face a burnout by the time he is 31-32.
