The Outsider Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 The following pick themselves, IMO : Openers : Sehwag, Tendulkar Middle Order : Gambhir, Yuvraj, Kohli, Raina Wicketkeeper : Dhoni Spinners : Harbhajan Pace Bowlers : Zaheer, Nehra, Praveen Kumar That leaves 4 spots - most likely one each for a : 1. Backup spinner 2. Backup pace bowler 3. Backup wicketkeeper who can double up as a batsman 4. Backup batsman/all rounder 1. For the spinner, there are two main contenders - Ashwin and Ojha. Ojha has more international experience and turns the ball the other way from Harbhajan. Ashwin has proved to be a good bowler in PP overs and that would prove useful if India play 2 spinners in a match. I would pick Ashwin. 2. The main contenders for the pace bowling spot seem to be Sreesanth, Munaf, and Ishant. All three are rather ordinary, but then so are the ones in the main squad. Sreesanth is usually terrible in ODIs in India, and Ishant just looks horrible. The least of the evils seems to be Munaf for me. 3. The contenders here seem to be Karthik, Parthiv, and Saha. Saha, while the best keeper is not up to the mark with his batting, which rules him out. Parthiv can only bat up the order. Karthik, with his versatility would be my pick. He can open as well as play the role of a finisher in the lower order. Is a very good ground fielder as well, and if need be can play as a specialist batsman. 4. Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Jadeja, and Vijay seem to be the main contenders here. Jadeja seems to be out though because he did not make it to South Africa, and Vijay has not done anything in ODIs or even international T20s to justify selection. Rohit and Yusuf look to be in a two way battle. I would pick Yusuf, unless Rohit is able to turn in some dramatic performances in the remaining series. In Indian conditions, he can be devastating at number 7. He probably won't be able to hack it against a good attack, but there aren't that many in world cricket.

Many of the other 'dilemmas' e.g. Munaf v Sree are a much of a muchness but for the 2nd spinner it would be genuinely difficult leaving either out. Would lean towards Ashwin atm I guess and I think Indian management do too That in mind, would agree with your squad outsider.

Sachin=GOD Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 @cricketics we absolutely cannot go with just 2 seamers in the World Cup because on the batting friendly subcontinent pitches, more often than not, one of the main bowlers (Nehra or Muunaf or PK) would go for plenty of runs so you have to have 3 seamers.

Agree with this personally but will the selectors agree? Even on personal front, Yuvraj is a big question mark for me. If Rohit performs well, why can't we put Yuvraj and Yusuf in two way battle for the all rounders slot? And what happens if none of the three perform here? Yuvraj has been in a sustained slump since last two seasons and frankly, I can't see him turning it around. But then I can't see Rohit or Yusuf doing wonders with bat either. Should we have two slots in XI with out of form bats if both Yuvraj and Yusuf/Rohit are chosen? We are all messed up then, with that terrible bowling line up!

In some ways you are rite, but if we check the Delhi wicket history, you see not many runs are scored there, games end with 240 being defendable. Especially last few games in Delhi which i reember against Aus and Eng were were low scoring where spinners saved us. I don't know how much Sehwag will be bowling in this tournament, so we definately might need a 2nd spinner.

More so, given that his potential replacements are equally if not more inconsistent.

So we'll choose Yusuf/Rohit--most probably the former, and then give a permanent place for Kohli in the playing XI as he seems to be in form. Should we demote Yuvraj to #7 then as a hitter? If the weight of expectation gets away from him, he might play well getting back the role of power hitter and finisher?

If Yuvraj is not able to find form, I would definitely prefer playing him over Pathan at number 7. Perhaps, without the expectation to build an innings he would be able to slog and middle a few in the last 8-10 overs. Also, I am more comfortable with his bowling than Yusuf's against stronger sides.

The only thing that would possibly change my mind would be if Rohit plays a blinder with the bat and bowls well in the next few ODI's then he wd maybe have a claim for displacing YP.
