The Outsider Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 So, what's your take? Sane or insane? I feel there were too many loopholes either way for any version to be very plausible. This is completely different from movies where either versions are equally plausible. The direction, acting, cinematography were top notch but the script seems to have too many holes in it, to convincingly support either or both versions. The original book is based on the insane premise and that the entire island is in a role play, BTW. But the author has said that once he gives off the rights for adaptation, it's up to the movie producers to modify the script.

Is there an alternative ending or something ? :hmmm: Well, you can assume that he was sane all along and driven to insanity by drugs for the purpose of experimentation - the conspiracy theory angle ie. he was a marshal who was actually sent out to investigate that someone was missing. What didn't set well with me regarding the entire role play angle was how can they have criminally insane people involved in role play, how was Teddy being allowed to roam around unescorted at times, how could they risk Teddy having access to hypodermic syringe which he could use to kill anyone etc.

I also didn't understand why he ran to the top of the lighthouse in the end like his life depended on it and didn't kill Ben Kingsley when he had the chance? Was his assistant actually his assistant or his (secret) doctor? So we have basically two possibilities: Leonardo was retarded from the beginning or he became a retard at the end of the movie. If it was the latter, what was the whole point of the movie?? So a sane guy becomes a retard and the movie ends; thats an abrupt end to the movie. If he was always a retard, why have a movie? Simple plots are extinct, it looks like.

IMO, he was insane. - In starting scene when they arrive on the island, the guards were already alert (like they knew he may try to escape). - When that interview was going on, that woman (or man - I don't remember properly) gives that note to him telling leo to escape or something. So we can assume that she knew leo was insane (that's one of them) and she was giving him an idea to escape (as he had good chances of escaping at that time). - When they arrive on that island, that old woman saying shhhhhhh... (not really concluding but still...!!) - The woman he meets in that cave clearly indicates that was his hallucination. (I mean come on, this can't coincidence!! She can't survive for so many days w/o food, being caught, any accident, etc. And she disappears in the morning. In 'sane' debate she finds another safe place to hide?? :WTF:) I can still find some other points to come to a conclusion that he was already "insane" but I've forgotten most of the storyline, as I had watched it few months back.

How can they risk leaving a demented patient running around like that? Ummm but why were they trying to lead him to believe tht his "assistant" died from falling on the rock o sumthin :/ Also, why does Dr. Cawley say to Teddy that he has no partner, when he returns from the night in the cave implying that his partner has been taken in by the hospital?

How can you get demented to people to role play so accurately? I have to rewatch the movie to actually see when he starts to show hints of insanity. They show his hands starting to tremble in the cave scene, so it might be construed as a sign of insanity setting in? But yeah, agree that the doctor being in the cave has to be a hallucination one way or the other.

She waits for teddy to go away from them (her and leo) and then only she gives it to him. She looks scared and clueless about the situation and tries to warn leo from teddy or whatever was happening around leo.

How can they risk leaving a demented patient running around like that? leo was there for long so they knew his limits and his behavior was pretty predictable as they mention that this wasnt the first time they were playing along :dontknow: Also, why does Dr. Cawley say to Teddy that he has no partner, when he returns from the night in the cave implying that his partner has been taken in by the hospital? when i saw the movie months back.. that scene did make sense :hmmm: now it doesnt :((
