ARR has taken music to a new level. We all enjoyed IR's music growing up, but there is clearly a difference in quality, some as a result of better equipment/recording etc. Overall for me, ARR's music is Supremo. If I listen to IR's music now, it sounds so ordinary. Yes it was good at that time, even then it wasn't as mesmerizing as some of ARR's numbers have been. To me ARR's greatest attribute is in bringing the country together like no other before him with numbers like "Maa Tuje Salaam".

I find ARR music repetitive and gimmicky, he overuses instruments, sometimes even masks it over singer's voice. Highly irritating, the words lose meaning (his lyricists are bad anyway, so it doesn't matter when the words are like cellphone, strawberry etc). IR's tunes are more melodioius, lyrics golden and music very earthen. ARR might have a varied output, but is only a jack of all, master of none!

Raja's gems from the 80's are still outstanding songs. C_R has listed most of the points that makes Raja's music so great. Nayagan, Thalapathi, Pudhu Pudhu Aarthangal (just to quote some of his movies) are still fresh even after all those years. I am a big fan of Rahman but i dont think Rahman is greater than Raja in any aspect. Raja is in a league of his own!!

And I can see that you and Mr Coffee have conveniently ignored the second paragraph in my post above. :winky: I think the Sundari song from Thalapathi is outstanding. The comparison cannot be made between this song and Minsara Poove because both are different, but i do think it is one of Raja's best compositions. The "yamunai aatrile" song from Thalapathi is another gem! With respect to Vande Maatram, well yes it is one of the most patriotic songs ever to be composed by a music director but how does that make him greater than Raja or any other music director?! Are you implying that because Rahman has a far greater reach that automatically makes him the best?
