amplifier Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I feel that Pakistan and Australia have emerged as two serious potential contenders. Australia are currently beating England 5-1 with injuries to Ponting,M Hussey, S Marsh They have chased 300 scores twice this series They have defended 230 in this series Brett Lee is back and bowling fast and he can win game with the bat Australia are currently ranked no.1 odi team in the world They have an excellent odi record in India, mainly due to their superb fielding They have so many IPL players and know the conditions really well Shane Watson at top of order giving them explosive starts I hope no one underestimates these guys otherwise they may run away with their fourth consecutive trophy (which would drive me mad) Pakistan have beaten NZ in their own conditions Emergence of Hafeez as strong opening batsmen and wicket taking bowler Emergence of Shezad as an explosive opener Wahab Riaz is improving each game They have v strong back up bowlers Many of their bowlers can bat as good as Harbhajan if not better (Afridi, Riaz, Tanvir, Gul) Sub continent conditions suit their slogging type batsmen They are hungry as they want to send a message to the rest of the world about being excluded from ipl and home tours etc
akshayxyz Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 NZ were beaten - equally and even more comprehensively by Bangladesh and India. So - Pakistan would be exposed soon. Australia has always been #1 contender, I would rate them even above India, SA.
jusarrived Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Aus have been the best side in ODIs , no surprise there ...though I agree Pak look a decently balanced side now , easily their best team in a few years ...they are not going to bother the top sides , I will be surprised if they make semis.
vvvslaxman Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Aus have been the best side in ODIs ' date=' no surprise there ...though I agree Pak look a decently balanced side now , easily their best team in a few years ...they are not going to bother the top sides , I will be surprised if they make semis.[/quote'] But pakistan's 1980s style of leaving acceleration till the last 10 overs will come back to bite them.
singhprakash72 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 It is indeed interesting . ..Aus and Pak do have side that can win this World Cup. History favors them and they some advantage 1. Expectation are low ..they have everything to win nothing to lose. 2. They are not traditional chokers (unlike SA,India )...in case of Pak if it is a close match they have good record of winning (if they lose they do so by huge margin ..like in current ODI series) 3.Traditionally both teams have aggressive players or game changers (Watson, Lee, Afridi, Razzaq etc) which is needed in for best of teams in a long tournament like this.

Should we include BD as well potential contenders?
jusarrived Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 But pakistan's 1980s style of leaving acceleration till the last 10 overs will come back to bite them. it clearly wont & why I think they will not worry the stronger sides ...they look a steady side with a lot of half decent players , capable of scoring and defending targets ~280 ..a few runs +/- they dont have the batting or bowling to win matches for them .
Sir_Afridi Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 it clearly wont & why I think they will not worry the stronger sides ...they look a steady side with a lot of half decent players ' date=' capable of scoring and defending targets ~280 ..a few runs +/- they dont have the batting or bowling to win matches for them .[/quote'] Pakistan doesnt need 300+ scores like some weak bowling sides including India,WI and NZ. If Pakistan batsmen can score 250 odd runs, then they will win most games due to powerful bowling attack.

PakSwinger Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 razzaq on subcontinent pitches = SLAUGHTER...thats all i gotta say...PEACE

Couldn't agree more sir:hatsoff:. I've been saying this for a long time and mark my words This World Cup will be a BLAST!:two_thumbs_up:
jusarrived Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 razzaq on subcontinent pitches = SLAUGHTER...thats all i gotta say...PEACE his bowling would be slaughtered too & every team has big hitters these days ..quite a few , a lot more destructive ..Razaaq isnt going to scare any one .
king2be98 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 his bowling would be slaughtered too & every team has big hitters these days ..quite a few ' date=' a lot more destructive ..Razaaq isnt going to scare any one .[/quote'] The same was said of his bowling in the 2009 T20 world cup, yet he was incredibly economical. Even I admit that Razzaq these days are cannon fodder, but people often gift their wickets away trying to attack him. He can actually still swing and seam it, it's just at 78mph it's very ineffective. He bowls about the same pace as Zaheer Khan and I mean this will all due respect, I think every bowler who does not clock 85mph regularly should be smashed out of sight. Razzaaq may suffer, no he will suffer tap, but he'll also take a few wickets too. I only wish he was played higher up the order, because he can be a lethal player when he gets in. His average and strike rate are an indication that he's pretty consistent too. Recently cricinfo produce an article stating over recent months Razzaq has been comfortably the most devastating player in the final 10.
Gunner_Mania Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 his bowling would be slaughtered too & every team has big hitters these days ..quite a few ' date=' a lot more destructive ..Razaaq isnt going to scare any one .[/quote'] Well isn't that what he said too?? that Razzaq's bowling on sub continent pitches will be slaughtered:hmmm:
fineleg Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 This World Cup will be a BLAST! Lets hope its not the kind that the infiltrators by boats do.
PakSwinger Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 his bowling would be slaughtered too & every team has big hitters these days ..quite a few , a lot more destructive ..Razaaq isnt going to scare any one . lol have you been watching recent cricket? He was given subcontinent conditions in dubai with the world's strongest bowling attack(SA)...we all know what he did :)
Raghav_12 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 lol have you been watching recent cricket? He was given subcontinent conditions in dubai with the world's strongest bowling attack(SA)...we all know what he did :) Yousuf Pathan is better. He did same to same bowling attack but in much tougher conditions of South Africa.
PakSwinger Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Yousuf Pathan is better. He did same to same bowling attack but in much tougher conditions of South Africa. what was the end result of that game? that my friend is the difference between pathan and razzaq
