SachDan Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 In 2007 it was the 8th match. Of course we all remember which match that was! In 2003 it happened as early as the 1st match when much fancied home nation South Africa was beaten by West Indies thanks to a brilliant Lara ton! In 1999, again it was the 8th match of the tournament India sans Goddy In 1996, it took good 20 matches. Kenya thrashed West Indies by 73 runs in that one! Look at the West indies team...omg!! http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65175.html In 1992, it was the 1st match when New Zealand lead by Martin Crowe beat Aussies in Trans-Tasman tie. So which minnow you think is gonna cause first major upset of this edition of World Cup? :hmmm:
The Outsider Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Tomorrow - Pakistan will maul Kenya. Not sure how you can count WI beating SA or NZ beating Aus as a 'major' upset. In fact even the '99 Zimbabwe team beating India was not a 'major' upset.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I suspect Windies may struggle against Ireland or Netherlands. Btw will it be an upset if B'desh loses to these teams?
Pioneer Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Didn't it already happen in the first game...?
Ultimate_Game Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Didn't it already happen in the first game...? Yup, you are right. I was expecting India to beat B'desh by a margin of 120-150 runs but India only managed to win by around 90, in part due to Sreesanth's pathetic bowling display. That really "upset" me and most of the Indian fans a lot.
punjabi_khota Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 If Pakistan can manage to get through this tournament without a major controversy, that will be the greatest upset in the history of World cricket. Current odds of a Paki doing the following in the WC (source bet365.com): A player biting a ball: 1-4 Match fixing: 1-3 Spot fixing: 1-1.5 Marrying and divorce with some fatty over internet : 1-5 Dancing on the pitch: 1-4 Commenting on hinduon ki zehniyat: 1-100(No sohail tanveer you see) Going awol due to threat to life and getting asylum in londonistan: 1-5

From the other group, Pakistan to beat the Aussies and NZ to surprise the Lankans on a fresh W'Khede Wicket.

Ranjha Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Who cares about a upset or two when the entire month of worldcup has been ruined. YAWN!

gaurav92 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Those are really good calls. Everything you said is very much possible. Yes, I saw the W'Khede wicket some days ago, it looked brown, and I don't think there was any difference in the wicket from the usual W'Khede wicket. So I am sure it will assist the seamers, also the bounce on the track will suit the spinners as well. But under the lights, it always swings there, so if NZ can bat first, put a healthy total of 250 on the board, I am sure they will fight and may register a win there, as we know, Dilshan and Tharanga, and even Mahela are found clueless to some lateral movement. So it wont be a surprise to me if that happens OTOH Aus/Pak game can be a crucial one, as Pak have got good spin attack and their batting is clicking nicely for them, you have Hafeez on top and even Afridi is looking dangerous. Although chances against Aussies are very slender, but I wont be surprised if Pak trap them in the spinning web. Bangladesh at home against a relatively weak English side, who almost gifted The Dutch a handy win, will surely give a tough fight Who knows, if Tamim clicks, and the trio of Shakib. Mahmudullah and Razzak can trouble the Englishmen, there is an upset on the cards. And the last prediction regarding Holland and Windies, I think, Holland struggle against spin a little, and since Windies have no good spinner in their side, it would be a challenge for their quicks to get early wickets on not so conducive wickets. Also the Neds have lots of slower bowlers suited on these slower tracks. Windies middle order looks a bit shaky, and its only Gayle, Sarwan and Pollard (upto an extent) who can win them matches. SO it will be a huge upset for the Windies if it happens after the '96 upset against Kenya
gaurav92 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Lanka playing group game in India?? Yes only one game against NZ at W"Khede. And it looks a fresh wicket, with some good carry, so I wont be surprised if Sanga whines about the pitch, the moment he arrives here :P
