If the household has a few cricket enthusiasts and the females are not discouraged from playing sports or cricket, then there's a good chance you'll find a few fans amongst the females as well. Also, there is a lack of mainstream female role models in India. The likes of Saina and Sania are a good start and things are changing for the good. And there are a lot of tournaments for all the popular sports for the females at the state/city level in India. So it is not as bad as it seems.

So understandably, the interest for cricket among women is proportionately lower. Having said that, we have so many female cricket followers right here on icf. I don’t think I have seen a more committed/sincere student/fan of the game than Chandan. Guys like me…our interest in the game is pretty much restricted to watching the odd match, talking about it and playing the occasional backyard game. But Chandan goes above and beyond that – she follows news, players and new developments closely.. she interacts with players even. Cricket is part of her daily routine. I doubt if anyone here, even Tics, can beat that. P.S; I am pretty sure the only reason Beets watches cricket is because Dravid is still playing. The day he retires, she will auto-delete all cricket related knowledge from her memory bank and free up some space..:--D

Also, OP should differentiate between following a game and discussing it. Many girls might like to watch cricket matches but might not like these 'discussions' My personal experience, there isn't much to discuss in cricket, beyond a certain point. Typical discussion (not necessarily on ICF): Guy A : My team beat yours today. hahaha. So who is the real champ? Guy B : But this still doesn't wipe out the hounding the you received at hands at xyz stadium in front of your own crowd. A: But we have always beat you at WCs. B: But you can't produce a fast bowler. A: Our batsmen average 211.256 , take that. And in the 90s in your so called golden era we averaged 205.216 B: But in the 90s the rules were different. I don't think I'll see a girl ever get this 'into' a sport. :P I joined ICF to discuss cricket. But I post more on Chit Chat & MoM thread :P. Someone mentioned that people like to follow sports that they play. I think thats incorrect. It has nothing to do with what you play. I play a bit of Indian chess (if you can call it a sport) and did Karate for some years ages ago. But I don't follow those sports. I've never played cricket but enjoy watching cricket.

Late Cut Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I think it's probably something that will shift completely within the next 30 years; similar to equality between the sexes. The primary reason, I would conjecture, is that women have had much more important matters to take care of, such as raising a family and all the related tasks therein, than the discussion and analysis of sport. As women become more independent and have more time for liesure, this dynamic will change, the same way certain womens sports are becoming more prominent, and female athletes more accepted. For example, most of the women that went to my Muay Thai (thai kickboxing) classes were a lot more hardcore and dedicated to training and competing than the guys were. I'd say that approximately 20-30% of the crowds at baseball games and football games i have been to are women, some of them vastly knowledgable about the game and it's history (interestingly, a lot of them have picked up their interest from their fathers who seem to have spent more time raising them than the generations before).
