King Khan Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Unless ECB & Ireland allow BCCI to send teams to play regular practice matches there, Ireland cant look for much support for test status from India. I dont mind giving Ireland this over-hyped test status, without giving them any actual matches right now. 1-2 test matches per year with England may turn them into a deserving one by 2020.
G_B_ Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 There is just no way the BCCI will allow Ireland to become a full member. As things stand Ireland are firmly in the England camp. BCCI would not want to strengthen the hand of England. If I was Ireland cricket i would cosy up the BCCI and ditch the ECB.
G_B_ Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 and on the issue of Ireland sustaining themselves. A huge chunk of the Irish squad are Aussies who qualify for Ireland via the "grandmother" rule. So basically its the Australian , Nz , English and Sa domestic structure sustaining Irish cricket. Bangladesh dont have the luxary. Its like how Jack charlton filled the Irish football team with Scottish, Italian and English players because their grandparents (or one of their grandparents) were Irish citizens. That "Irish" team went on to beat Italy in the 1994 world cup..... Even somebody like Scotland are technically field a good test team because of many good domestic players having scottish grandmothers. Politics aside i would grant Ireland test status. I would hope say within 10-15 years they will produce more Eion Morgans to make up atleast 4 players in the playing 11 who are home grown Irish nationals.

And I doubt that Ireland can become a better side than Bangladesh, atleast not for some time. What Ireland lacks is fan-base as cowboyfans mentioned. We are starting to show department and we have a huge number of youngsters who would want to become a cricketer. If you look at the Irish team, one will notice that several of their players are not even Irish. Irish are good in so many other sports. Cricket isnt even the top 5 sports in Ireland. In the longrun, you need a good fanbase. Its not a suprising to see the demise of WI(other than T20s) and NZ due to lack of fanbase i.e. small population and the lack of interest among kids these days. Even in England, you will hardly find too many youngsters who are interested towards cricket.

But how you suppose a sport like Cricket can be developed with a cricket board full of weed smokers, who have nothing to do but change the rules every single season, and swallow BCCI money? Unlike other sports, there is barely much cricket happening. Only a handful of cricket matches are televised, in comparison to other sports. The reason why their players get chance in BPL is simple, because of lack of interest among top class T20 players. And only 3 Irish players played by the way. And the last time we bvisited Ireland, we beat them 3-0. I think we are better than them

When was the last time you guys gave Pak such a fight or drew against them? I agree you did it at Asia Cup but these guys were against a much superior bowling attack compared to the Wahabs and Cheemas you faced. If there is anyone who deserves a Test status, its them and they have done enough to deserve it.
