Footage of his most famous Test innings — 281 against Australia at the Eden Gardens — is helping inspire a World Cup team 10 years on. Players have been given DVDs, each including his own special performances. Yusuf Pathan’s DVD has his 105 against South Africa at Centurion in January; Gautam Gambhir’s has last year’s back-to-back tons against New Zealand. “Essentially, it’s an ego boost for self-doubting players,†a team source said. The inclusion of Laxman’s innings, which gave India victory after following on, is to inspire a similar comeback in the World Cup. “Watching your own match-winning performances and videos of Laxman’s innings really lifts your morale,†said a player. The video includes inspirational messages and targets set by the management for each player. Mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton has been coming up with new games and training schedules to help players relax.
